......so why is California burning?
Fuel buildup from the very wet summer followed by autumn dryness. Lots of dead grass around to burn. Plus its a typical La Nina USA pattern to be cold in the east and warm in the west. Probably not such a good snow season in the Rockies, pretty epic in the Appalachians.
Its the winter nearly a year ago they had the good rains

Good amount, anything below 20mm doesn't do a lot, gone within a day or so

There was some TCu around first thing. Looks like a fine day for Auckland with a southwest breeze, the afternoon showers will be well north.

Starting to doubt if any rain will make it here today. Happy to stand corrected!

Nothing in the central city yet. Only a light drizzle at home. 0.2mm at airport. Doubt it will reach the 1mm required to break the 'streak'

Looking very good for rain in Canterbury tomorrow, moist onshore flow, cold upper trough crossing.

Interesting GFS run for 11/12/2017 18z for December 19th / 20th. It's put together a 969 hPa bombing surface low attacking the east coasts of South and North islands. With current the SST's, it would be an warm air advection machine. Needs to show up a few more times and on a few more models to be taken seriously but one to watch

Thank you for using this interesting word, I've happily followed a bunny-trail of research into it now :)
