Re: General December Weather
Hi I have just signed up on this forum but have followed it for a while to get more info on the weather that's going on. My name is Nathanael I have been very interested in weather since I was a kid. I got a bit of experience with weather when I did a lot of mountaineering in my early 20's. I now live in burnham Canterbury and am still hanging out for a good thunderstorm this season.(kids share my passion)
We have had 2.5 mm today to dampen the brown paddocks

Welcome to the forum
Good to have another Canterbury member on board.
Might be some thunder around tomorrow, this depends on lightning strikes, either CC or Cg or even CI

Indeed. Welcome
Fun weather fact, max daily temperature average was 29.5 for the first 11 days of December for our hood. Amazing!

Maybe some nightime lightning over the west of the North Island overnight tonight as the upper level trough comes through? Certainly some precip possible.

Welcome Nathanael, they are a friendly bunch around here
Fair amount of water on the ground in New Brighton this morning, someone said it fell from the sky but I didn't believe them
.
Seriously though, kind of refreshing to see rain.

Re: General December Weather
Some very moist air for parts of the country early next week, hence the big instability numbers showing in the GFS. Have to wait and see how that will translate into showers. Dewpoint around 20C upper North Island, the first real humid weather of the Summer.

Re: General December Weather
Attached grab from ECan rain gauge page shows a lot of Christchurch received no rain at all yesterday, despite some of the western and northern fringes getting several mm's. So for many the dry streak is still 'going'

6mm here. It promised more but didn't really deliver. Friend in Sheffield has reported 40mm, that's fantastic

Re: General December Weather
I noticed driving back from Temuka to Geraldine this afternoon between the Manse Bridge and Speechley's Bridge, there were isolated pockets of very heavy rain and light drizzle. You could see the heavy bursts with rain bouncing on the road ahead of you.
Driving through, gave the car a good wash
Quite amazing.

Another rainy/thundery spell crossing NZ Sunday/Monday to keep the farmers happy.

Not even 0.2mm here. Monday looks a get a flood or nothing at all day. So don’t hold out hope on getting anything that day. Will try to do some storm chasing tho!

Picked up 3.6mm here. Not really that much but better than nothing.
Just noticed that the mean temperature for my station this month is higher than both last January and February.
