Nelson Airport reporting thunderstorm.
I see the forecast low for Auckland in the morning is 12C. Quite chilly on what we have been getting lately.

Re: General December Weather
In Nelson on holiday and managed to get treated to some thunderstorm action. Got rather hot mid afternoon, 27 deg C in the shade on my Thermodo plugged into my iPhone. Wind was swinging SW to NW most of the afternoon (planes landing and taking off from airport proved that!).
Dark clouds built from south and finally managed to push over top of the remains NW wind and things started to get going rather nicely. A couple of impressive cloud to cloud strikes covering a LONG distance between clouds!!
Managed to capture some closer strikes via slo mo videos as the lightning got closer to Stoke.
First frame of a reasonably close strike. Overloads the camera sensor, but you can see the fingers of lightning coming down from the cloud Main flash completely overloading camera sensor The remnants of the CG strike And subsequent CC action soon after

7.0°C here at present
; the line of clouds to the east spectacularly hard-edged against the light of the sun.
Nice to hear the rain at times yesterday.

There looks to have been about 6 other sites in and around Culverden between 1983 and 2009, including the airfield for the the first 6 years. There's also a thread about the current site here.RWood wrote: Tue 26/12/2017 16:42 What was the previous Culverden site like? Presumably the newer one at the airstrip gets well ventilated ...

Re: General December Weather
Thanks Nev, interesting. With about 6-7 sites for the 1981-2010 period, assigning some normals values must have been an interesting exercise ...Nev wrote: Wed 27/12/2017 07:05There looks to have been about 6 other sites in and around Culverden between 1983 and 2009, including the airfield for the the first 6 years. That one was just under 1km away and was nice and loud.NZstorm wrote: Wed 27/12/2017 07:47 Great shots BeaconHill. Lightning in the first frame looks very close!
The CC one streaked further across the sky for a long distance and rumbled for ages as a result.
Must say, the iPhone slo-mo mode worked well at capturing the images. I then just took screen grabs of the relevant frames out of a 1min long video recording each time.

17 mm here in total from Tuesday and overnight mainly. Seemed like some pretty moist air Tuesday round lunch time with first wave of showers from the south.

A cool airmass over Auckland today, 850mb temp 3C. Typically I add 16C to the 850mb temperature to get an idea of the maximum for the day.

The dewpoint in Auckland is only 5C, normal is around 16C.
The Airport showing 7.6mm for December, Grey Lynn with 13.8mm. Next rain will be with a humid trough early in the New Year, a lot of instability showing up in the GfS on the back of some very moist air for early New Year.

Good dusting of snow on the kaikoura ranges yesterday coming back from the sounds. The warmth of pre Xmas had subsided for sure.

That low off the east coast of the north island is tightening up nicely. Now blowing 45 knots on the marine traffic wind obs at 9am. Not too many ships wanting to take it on

Went walking in the Hunua Ranges this morning. Nice day for it, not so hot today. Cloud cover burnt off nicely by late morning.
