And to be that far away from the radar too, there's a few mountain ranges in between

This is the most I've seen on the southland radar there was lots of thunderstorms in Fiordland and the west coast during that time. (25th September 2016)

Will the incoming high cloud make it far enough south to hinder cloud development today in the northern half of the island?

Yes, the best storm prospects are over Central Otago. Could be some localised flooding there this afternoon. More isolated storms further north.Richard wrote: Thu 04/01/2018 07:26 Will the incoming high cloud make it far enough south to hinder cloud development today in the northern half of the island?

Atmosphere quite "oppressive" this morning; one almost has the sense that it's raining already, but it isn't. Very murky/misty.
17.7° at present.

High cloud streaming down from the north this morning in the Marlborough sounds, could see the impressive storms to the north and south from our boat in waikawa yesterday afternoon.

Not as good as yesterday as the depth of instability is diminishing as you go through the afternoon today due to the upper level warming influences of the inbound subtropical storm.

A wee bit of instabilty showing up to the west from here at the moment.
I see thunderstorms have ripped into life down Otago way again.

Got gone quiet in the last 10 mins, the out flow cloud is coming over SE while it drifts SSW, expecting a few drops of rain any time

Sort of disappointing down here. No real umph in the clouds but mind you there were the odd sfericals now and then. The upper atmos must be warning due to the incoming low pressure system.
