Slow moving trough, prolonged rain Mid and Upper South Island 9-12 Jan
Models showing a trend to more dumper weather in the next week or so, that would be ideal for my location because the 21mm that fall Friday was not enough on its own to have been any use, but to have a back up rainfall mid week would great.

Looking like an upper trough will be the player in the South Islands weather this week with widespread precip. Not good for sun worshippers on holiday. Maybe Central Otago will escape the worst of it. Modelling for Tuesday suggests a thunderstorm or two developing over the Otago/Canterbury foothills. Airmass is very moist.
Looking like isolated thunderstorms over the North Island this coming week too. More likely late week when they could become more widespread.

Yes a good sign. Poked the shovel into the ground yesterday, the 21mm had seeped about 6cm then bone dry past that, problem will be a couple hot days and that 6cm will heat up and evaporate. Soil has been getting to 26deg at 10cm depth on the hot day lately.

Re: General January Weather
Well that is going to be interesting .Antecedent rainfall becomes problematic on the West Coast if there is an insufficient break between the rain bands to allow the streams and rivers and any surface flooding to abate

Re: General January Weather
The weather is currently moving from the west yet its raining more on the eastern side than the West Coast, dont often see that.

Yes, the 21mm a few days back would have long gone. Its a lovely steady rain this morning. Not sure how much of this rain is spillover though, the lower cloud is streaming in from the SW

Tomorrow could get interesting, somewhere is going to really cop it I fear, not used to it being so mild while it rained in the South island, more a northern set up. 22mm here so far with increasing intensity

Had 30.2 total for this event, a useful amount now.
