The NE is too dominant for much in the way of shower development so far over Waikato, late afternoon may see some convergence west of Hamilton.

Re: General January Weather
Lower half of the North Island is erupting with Storms atm. (Himawari Vis Image attached)
The NE is far too dominant across the Waikato and has effectively pushed the convergence zone offshore where prime surface heating will not be achieved.
Models had hedged a bet on a light westerly interaction with NE to kick off convergence, seems unlikely now this late in the day.

Re: General January Weather
Models have a slow moving polar trough in the Tasman this coming week with a cut off surface low developing. As the system crosses NZ mid to late week there may a thunderstorm day or two for the country. Something to watch.
Quite a spectacular amount of lightning over the lower NI today. Thats the region this summer that has the best of the lightning events I think.

And yet I only saw one bolt! A close CG while driving in the rain, plenty of thunder though and got some timelapse footage (uploaded to NZ Stormchasers)

Re: General January Weather
Unusual to have such a heavy dew in mid summer, more like we get in mid autumn. Its got feeling its going to get hot today.

Re: General January Weather
Rain this week in Nelson should have sent many home. If the forecast is right our little NI trip next week (16th-21st) should be spoilt as far as the weather is concerned.

Re: General January Weather
next week ramping up for some heavy rain in the north.Systems again very slow moving as this Moist NE flow becomes more active. Going to be interesting. I will be in Canada from Mon so will miss all the action.T storms yet to get going, NE flow not as strong as yesterday so hopefully storms further north ?

A couple of photos of the Feilding warned storm approaching and passing just north of the Palmerston North airport, just after 5pm yesterday.

Quite a bit of distant thunder coming from a cell over the Tararuas, just to the SE of Palmy. Darkening up over the city as well.
