Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
Message for Richard, any chance you could be passing through Waiau sometime and might want to try to find the weather station there and take a photo of it for us, posting here? It would be interesting to see how good the exposure is and whether the much-quoted 37 can be taken seriously.

Re: High temperatures 23-28 January
Stations that are sited in microclimate locations that wouldn't meet WMO standards should not be used as official reading as in NIWA's Waiau and Hanmer Springs. Waiau's CWS as you will see in the link is close to buildings and has asphalt playing areas nearby and a number of trees to slow airflow https://www.google.co.nz/maps/@-42.6538 ... 6656?hl=en

Thanks, if you look on Maps from above, you can see its right on the edge of the asphalt area. Not ideal, probably a degree or more coming off that.

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
If the sun is out during the warmer months Waiau is always 2-3 deg warmer than here (and now Culverden), though its reasonable except that on days of SW winds these winds will have more time to warm, but if on NW days or sea breeze days there shouldn't be that difference

Did they do something to Kawerau's site? Last summer it seemed to dominate the hottest temps.

The Kawerau AWS is monitored by MetService (although I'm not sure if they actually own it) and got to around 32C today according to their Twitter page. It used to only get a mention on TV One if its temps were 'noteworthy', but since their new format it looks like they don't bother anymore…Richard wrote: Fri 26/01/2018 17:43Good point, who owns the recording siteCaptain Salty wrote: Fri 26/01/2018 17:26 Did they do something to Kawerau's site? Yes, Quite often Kawerau popped up as the maximum temperature on the TVOne weather.
Just like Riccarton on the NIWAR.

Interesting weather day. 24C showing on the car before 9am on way to work this morning. Still 28.5C at Hamilton Airport at 7pm just before the storm outflow breeze hit there. Then ended with the thunderstorm.

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
Off topic slightly here but what would be the highest monthly mean recorded in NZ ?
I recall the upper North Island had monthly averages above 22C in February 2016, that could possibly be repeated this month.

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
I looked at some average Tmax MTD numbers - for Cromwell EWS after 26 days, the average Tmax is a whisker under 29.1C. The highest number I have ever seen in monthly summaries was 28.7 to 1 decimal place (28.65 is the average of the daily Tmax values) for the Cromwell site in January 1956. Also looked at 2 Wanaka sites and Alexandra CWS, which were a little lower.

Re: High temperatures 23-31 January
THE PRESS has a story on the hottest day recorded in NZ, 42.4C in Rangiora on 5th Feb 1973, in this morning's paper.
A quote from the article;
"It was so hot that tens of thousands of chickens perished in overheated poultry farms, factory workers walked off the job, schools and offices closed early, railway lines buckled and thermometer recording the temperature in Cathedral Square literally went of the chart"

Wanaka was the hotspot in the South Island today with 35C, Alexandra and Pukaki showing 33C.
In the North Island Hamilton airport got to 30C and Auckland Ardmore 30C.

I remember working on a Dsc shunt loco that day and the shunters called it quits as the handrails and coupling hooks were too hot to handle.
I think THE PRESS article should be on STUFF if anyone wants to read it.
