Inland South Island Thunderstorms 3 March
There were a few rumbles of thunder heard towards Mt. Peel this afternoon and I don't know of any more thunderstorms did eventuate down south as per today's STW from MS.
Tomorrow looks promising. Thought I would start a new topic, incase
Mod note: If nothing eventuates, or just coud be added to the General March weather, you can delete this topic.

That storm yesterday John was very isolated but in the evening storms did develop over western Southland.
Plenty of thunder over the inland hills today given the upper trough has moved closer. Isolated severe hail/flash flood risk. The dewpoint at Alexandra this morning is 17C.

There was heating over inland Southland yesterday afternoon. I'm in the Catlins this weekend, thick fog never cleared the coastal fringe yesterday, partly cloudy inland, distant shower cloud in the west.

Is there much chance today do you think? I do have plans this afternoon however can keep it free to chase if looks promising.NZstorm wrote: Sat 03/03/2018 07:39 That storm yesterday John was very isolated but in the evening storms did develop over western Southland.

If looked at models and numbers stack up well. But will it be to far inland to get access is more my wonders

It looks as though it is 'stuck' up the Rangitata Gorge for a good hour or so.
Long continuous rumbles.
Now rumbling way in beyond and over the 4 Peaks area

Lets see what happens

Drove from the Catlins to Ranfurly this afternoon via Middlemarch, the convergence was well inland. We drove through a nice thunderstorm near Ranfurly this evening.

Nice picture there.
Will put some photos later.
All quietened down now but still some interesting forms about.
That Rangitata Gorge one lasted about 2 hours'
Thank goodness spwill was in the Otago region to see the storms down there.

A couple of photos from the Otago storms. We had continuous loud thunder near Ranfurly as an active cell passed over, 1 very close Cg strike.

Here's looking towards the Rangitata Gorge area about 5pm with continuous rumbling of thunder.

25mm in 1 hour near Fairlie last night according to a friend. Could hear the thunder from here near Pleasant point for a couple of hours between 6 and 8pm
