Expect a lot less action in these type of flows living In Geraldine than West Melton.South Canterbury often sheltered in this set up.We had sleet/hail showers up until lunchtime with another brief shower now,most of the action now will be north of Ashburton.

Yes. your right on this. Much of the stuff moves up through the Canterbury Bight and onto land west to east and south of ChCh. WM would be getting a bit of more substantial stuff from this weather than here.

Will be interesting to see how much damage is across Auckland at daybreak. Standard tree damage but there was some quite destructive gusts for a 2 hour period last night. Bottomed here around 990.9, had a gust of 65 km/h which is significant for my position with a westerly. Not surprised the bridge got 133 km/h.

We had thunder here in Rakaia around 5am this morning. Currently a good strong southerly and having a look at the metservice just now it seems these 35 to 40 km/h winds will continue throughtout the daylight hours. Will certainly make driving the bus interesting.

Only maxed at 74km/h on my station. Pretty high for a NW for my location. Was surprised it didn't go above that when it turned SW as that is a stronger direction here.

Minor tree damage around here however there are a couple of streets blocked by fallen trees. We don't get much strong wind here and last night was the strongest wind I have experienced in Auckland. The main wind storm only lasted a couple of hours


GFS is showing a humid thundery trough over the upper North Island at the weekend.

Even though the Metservice warning for 120 km/h gusts was issued well in advance (which was quite accurate since most areas of Auckland would not have exceeded this)

A relatively chilly 7.2C here this morn. Lost power for a little while last night, although parts of Waiheke were still without power this morn. Waiheke ferries were cancelled after 8pm last night and I see Akld Aero was also closed overnight due to debris on the runway.

And fair enough to have criticism, but media should be critical of themselves, not forcasters. The metservice clearly had warnings in place, but they can only do so much. They rely on the media to spread the word and it seems that this storm wasn't a high priority for the media. They tell us about cyclones 2 weeks in advance, yet this storm barely rated a mention. Maybe because it wasn't a cyclone, is wasn't going to generate the clickbait?

I did pick a good time to be in Melbourne, 28.3 deg and muggy here, the family members left back home say there's no snow on the ground but i see there's been 45.2mm as of now

Muggy? RH only about 35% across the area an hour ago (dewpoints around 10C or so).

Thats interesting, felt higher than that, a TV screen in the post office during the morning showed a forecast 75%

I've seen photos of exceptionally early snow on Mt Pirongia and Tarawera this morning.
