Re: General April Weather
Clouding up from the south now with some low cloud coming off the coast. A bit of a SE blowing now from the SE direction. Having trouble trying to lodge on the Rakaia Rain-radar

Up in Northland for a few days so missing today's chances sadlymikestormchaser wrote:Will either take a drive to birdlings flat tonight or watch the lightning from home in rolleston.NZstorm wrote: Sat 21/04/2018 08:33 Looking like Banks Peninsula the most likely spot for a possible TS today. Problem in Canterbury will be the westerly ahead of the southerly change. Ideally want a NE which is not signaled in any modeling. Dps' will be good off the coast 10C.
Should be some nice looking clouds atleast

Re: General April Weather
Nothing happening here but cooling down now.
Light variable winds, with no westerly component to concern any development except maybe higher up.
Humidity up to 60% which probably produced a few drops of rain from a clear but hazy sky above around 3pm.
Lower cloud moving in now from the East or SE.

Three days of on and off gales should be taking a break once the wind change gets here.

Dark clouds that looked beautiful in the setting sun coming in, but not sure how substantial they are. MetService site is having trouble so no radar, it’s window-watching time

Re: General April Weather
I drove through a bit of scattered splashy rain between Methven and Ashburton around 4:30pm today.
Could glimpse a big billowing white tower at times through the low-level cloud.
Wondered if I'd just now heard thunder and discovered the radar outage.

Re: General April Weather
Reasonable little storm through Somerfield, brief heavy rain, small hail and decent lightning, some quite close

Re: General April Weather
One big clap of thunder over Amberley then a brief but very intense rain shower. Good call from those who saw thunder with this situation, I didnt think it looked likely myself.

Re: General April Weather
A coastal thunderstorm moved across Rangitata Island about 8:30pm this/yesterdy evening whilst my wife and I were attenting a function at the local areodrome there.
Some noisy rumbles of thunder were heard to make a few people rush outside and appreciate what was going on. I took some movie sh0ts which I'll post up later. A few Cg's were noted.
It was interesting to hear people's comments about the thunder, heard.

We did see flashes from his house witch was Cool! But getting reports from others was hard when your not there.

24 hours now with no observations, radar or sat images on metservice website. Not only that there are no New Zealand synop reports in international bulletins for the last 24 hours so what is that going to do to the weather models?

Re: General April Weather
Most models really getting off the leash on the 12z for next weekend. GFS going a fujiwhara effect scenario with a major hit on the NI from the initial superior cold core low and significant polar feed upper trough in the mix. Still needs few more runs before locking in but the sea surface temp is supportive of a major synoptic scale Tasman cyclonic gyre ATM.

Re: General April Weather
Clear calm nights are in winter mode sad to say, still, got the lovely warm days though, but the end of this week is starting to look like a major low pressure developing over northern areas.
