Re: General May Weather
23mm light on and off rain since it started yesterday. All models no match in tracking how the cut off low would move across the Tasman. One slight change and rainfall in the upper NI changes drastically on each run. UKMet run for south of Auckland this morning had a 70mm downgrade from the 00z to 12z runs. Maybe another twist to come...
SSW event now starting to fully ramp up at the surface of Antarctica. Extraordinary 5 degree temp change in 10 days which is no mean feat on an area that size.

Re: General May Weather
Some seriously cold temps in the deep south earlier this morning where the ridging allowed for frost. Dunedin Airport got down to -3C and Invercargill Airport -2C and there was freezing fog at both locations.

Nice one Tony
Cold old stagnant day down here with not much wind and lots of broken cloud.
Staggering to get above 8C
How about BoringWeatherageddon?

Took this pic while out walking early afternoon, we had beautiful warm sunny conditions, with 21C at the time. Unexpectedly nice day given the forecast only 1-2 days prior.

Re: General May Weather
I see Dunedin Airport currently on -4C. I wouldn't have expected a frost that severe at Dunedin Airport considering the airmass is not unduly cold. Queenstown showing -2C.
Unexpected thunderstorms for Taranaki this morning with 20mm in an hr. An MCS came in off the Tasman Sea. More thunderstorms for that area next 2-3 days. As far north as Raglan overnight tonight.
Tornado risk late Tuesday. I base that on the GFS 850mb winds strengthening to 35knots late tomorrow which increases low level shear.

Re: General May Weather
Up to 37.2mm since the moist northerly came in on Friday. A bit of drizzle this morning with a juicy 17c Dew point.
Latest EC run 12Z starting to ramp up a lot of sea level snow within 8 days for the SI. Even around Christchurch in places like Sumner getting some. Need a few more runs to verify of course but something is brewing

Re: General May Weather
The relentless cloud and insane patchy drizzle here the past 24 hours must be a record breaker, surely? And the wind, wow not a breath of it. How can this not be front page screaming headlines?

Re: General May Weather
There should be quite a bit of sunshine for Auckland today so temperatures will be well above average again.
We still have the subtropical air over us tomorrow but the day looks cloudier.

Re: General May Weather
12z run EC, New GFS and CFS are picking up a polar vortex super pulse in the 8 to 10 day zone. -35 to -40c at 500 hPa over the SI. Starting to become quite interesting ....
