Coming onshore now, a very heavy shower a little earlier as I returned from the new workplace in Amberley and something intense approaching on the radar now. I was out at Motunau beach earlier in the day and there were some wonderful anvil forms in all directions.

Looks a mainly fine weekend here.Any fronts look very coastal.A clear frosty morning.
Next weekend onwards looks interesting with a low brewing in the Tasman.

Had a look through on Metvuw’s precipitation and pressure charts yesterday, looks potentially nasty if it comes off.

Latest EC still showing a sharp upper polar injection on system 4 into eastern parts of both Islands early Monday morning. I can see why MS has snow about the Port Hills in there forecast for Christchurch as mentioned by Bradley. If EC and Icon verify, around -30c at 500 hPa, 13c SST, 2c to 4c surface air temps, freezing levels near 500m and a southerly moisture transporter...low snow on that side of NZ is a chance.

A non event south of Banks Peninsula...a frosty week to come

A robust shortwave this afternoon may produce isolated thunder for Auckland/Waikato. 500mb temp -25C on ukmet but that looks to be the hieght of the trop as well, so low topped cb's.

850mb temp tomorrow over Auckland could be as low as -2C which corresponds to a max of about 12C.
27 May 2014 was the last time we had a May day that cold.

On a brighter note it will be a mainly sunny week ahead but temperatures below average.
A Tasman low next weekend will bring in milder weather with rain or showers in the mix.

Seems I spoke too soon. During the hour to 3am on Friday morning Cape Turnagain recorded gusts to 232 km/h according to MS.

Note though that the Cape Turnagain AWS is an ultrasonic Vaisala WXT520 that was replaced 5 times in 7 months between Oct 2015 and Apr 2016, so possibly not the most reliable WS...

Just looked back at the photos for the years living in Christchurch and the earliest snowfalls (flurries) I can recall in Christchurch have been in June - that's between 1985 and 2013.

It snowed to about 200m on the Port Hills on the 28th of May 2013. If that is included as Christchurch? Or were you referring to sea level flurries?

EC's run this morning (12Z) is suggesting sleet and flurries in central Christchurch in the early hours of tomorrow morning between midnight and 3am, which based on history is very rare in May and not likely it seems. With freezing levels around 500 to 600m, EC is suggesting that super cooling might be taking place in the melting and evaporation process, so snow levels drop well below the freezing level. Time will tell I suppose

Very interesting indeed... might need a late night so I can witness something that rare. I would be surprised but stranger things have happened.

There was a light dusting (mixed with hail) on an evening of late May 2013. Plus non-settling flurries reported in 2006, 2009, and 2014. Back in May 1988, there was a blanketing in the city, which apparently lay around for a week in fine, frosty weather. (I wasn't there at the time)

^ Around May 20, 1988 - snowfall, followed by hard frost in Ashburton.
