Re: General May Weather
Five years to the day it snowed here, apparently, this was what came up on the O-H's Facebook feed, 27th May? maybe they were a day early.
Told the family its likely to snow overnight.

Quite settled here today with partly cloudy skies but you could see the weather that ChCh is getting moving up, off the coast, SW to BP and possibly ChCh.

Energetic out there for sure, gusty wind and some intense showers on and off through the afternoon so far. A great start to winter in terms of interesting weather.

Moon is out here atm, but over all a day of passing cloud and a cold wind. Will the showers move more inland like the MS believe they will ?

Interesting how showers north west of CHCH have just sprung up out of no where.

At around 11pm in the Christchurch region and nearby seas, the difference between sea surface and 850 hPa is near 20c. That will be fairly unstable air and a recipe for cold convection. Here is my 2 bobs worth on the 7pm sat pic with current thickness lines. That 524 line is a bullseye for parts of North Canterbury on it's current track.

Looking at current conditions... I can't see the temperature in Christchurch dropping 4-5deg in 3 or 4 hours. I'd love to be proven wrong though.Cyclone Tracy wrote: Sun 27/05/2018 19:37 At around 11pm in the Christchurch region and nearby seas, the difference between sea surface and 850 hPa is near 20c. Re: General May Weather
That PWS at Port Hills is now 2c with a 0c dew point, 1 to 2 mm/hr rate. Fair chance its snowing there with the last shower IMO. Polar upper injection at 500 hPa still a few hours off being over the SI

Chain showers with a mix of rain and small hail for the last couple of hours here in Porirua
Apparently the hail caused a bit of chaos for people coming into work on the motorway, visibility reduced to almost nothing

No snow on Port Hills; dusting only on higher peaks above about 700m on peninsula as I went over this morning. Sleet at Hilltop.

Re: General May Weather
I see snow settled around 350m to 400m on the hills near Oxford at sunrise, a little surprising with ground temperatures, must of been a solid line of showers in that area.
Upper cold pool of air moving towards the Tasman in the next 48 hours. All models are locking in a Tasman cut off low late in the week but hard to tell what it will do. Models struggle with cut off lows until the circulation begins.

Re: General May Weather
A NIWA tweet states that Monday (28th May) could be the sixth coldest May day for the Auckland area with a maximum of just 11.4*C at their Mangere site.

Does Auckland get many single figure maximums in the winter?

Re: General May Weather
Yes, but they are very rare. On 15th August 2012 we had a high of 7C and falling snow was recorded in parts of the region. It's entirely possible the 11.4C reading yesterday could end being the coldest max of the year. But as winter hasn't offically started yet we will have to wait and see how the winter goes.Simon Culling wrote: Mon 28/05/2018 22:44 A NIWA tweet states that Monday (28th May) could be the sixth coldest May day for the Auckland area with a maximum of just 11.4*C at their Mangere site.

2.8C min here earlier. I see parts of rural NW Auckland and rural SE (around Hunua) dipped just below 0C this morning.

That snow event in Auckland was actually on August 15, 2011.NZstorm wrote: Tue 29/05/2018 06:53Yes, but they are very rare.
