Thunder Forecast: Saturday night/Sunday Morning in the Northland and Auckland Area, a High Risk of thunderstorms. Again Good Cape, negative lifted Index, cold upper air and strong shear. Will contribute to a high risk of a thunderstorms. 10-15mm in places.
Also a low Risk of this system producing Tornadoes

T-shirt weather???
'Worst' day of the year so far here in the Waikato.
Heavy rain now almost horizontal, very strong northwesterlies rising to gale here.
16c though
Continuous heavy rain since about 10pm last night, but I think this is a very long shower at the moment, skies very black to the North and East, brightening a bit elsewhere. Havnt heard any noticable thunder, rain is a little hard.
edit:
I see Wellington's Aotea Quay by the caketin has been worse off with surface flooding, as has Egmont Village in Taranaki. Looks like Kaikoura has it the worst now.
-5 in Queenstown, while 16c up here... It's mid-winter now, 17c would be very unusual for this time of year here, probably not Auckland.

Nice stuff guys looks like a good day for TS in the north today.
Drizzle turned to rain here last night and gradually got slightly heavy also some sleet falling at about midnight when i checked outside before going to bed
.
Still cloudy here but it is meant to clear very soon a lovly 13.6mm last night seemed the further north you headed the heavier the rain was compare that with say Timaru as to Kaiakoura.
Cheers
JASON.

Same for central Chch but I didn't notice any sleet around midnight(and no snow on Port Hills this morning). Cleared here just before dawn; cloud returned late morning for a time, but clear again now.

It may well get that cold tonight, however there is a SW flick working it's way up the SI east coast which could introduce some flow along the coast here. If it does and doesn't die out by morning we could see a low of only 1 degree? (maybe 3?) Chances are there will be some still period during the night so -2 seems a safe bet. Will be frosty inland.

Yes, the ingredients look to be coming togeather, mild moist low level air with colder upper air coming in. A nice looking cold pool over the western/central Tasman tonight.Thunder Forecast: Saturday night/Sunday Morning in the Northland and Auckland Area, a High Risk of thunderstorms. Winds are light here and fog-free & mainly fine this early morningManukau heads observer wrote:wind dropped away this afternoon
so i think there will be fog in inland areas 2 nite...

Yet more easterlies developing today and rain, which should be heavy during the night.
Heavy in Northland during the afternoon. Late Northwest change Auckland northwards however.
It looks 'quite' heavy for the garden city on Tuesday however.

Well what do you know. Didn't get down to -3 at all here in Chch, we only went down to +3. Pretty pleased with my previous estimate!
It looks like inland areas didn't even get a frost.
It looks as if there was some flow from the sw at night, but it may of also been a combination of some cloud etc to that helped keep temps up.
Looking foward to the thunderstorm reports coming in hopefully!! Last time I looked there didn't seem to be great wind strength in the shear but there was quite good directional shear (turning in the atmosphere) so that could well counteract that fact. Anyway, hopefully someone gets something!
Cheers.

With all the fog and low cloud around in North Canterbury yesterday the humidity was always going to be too high to allow a clear night, low cloud was inevitable. It may have been different from CHCH southwards though, with less cloud and mist there yesterday.Aaron J Wilkinson wrote:Well what do you know.
