Tornado photo
Photo here of Saturdays tornado over SE Auckland near Ardmore. This was taken by a staff member at Heli-flight based at Ardmore airfield. This sighting is about 8km (as the crow flies) from flat bush were I photographed tornado damage on Saturday afternoon. Hence this could be a different tornado to the flat bush one, but the same thunderstorm.
This storm dumped around 50mm rain/hail in the Remuera/Greenlane area of central Auckland.
edit. Thanks to Heli-Flight (NZ) Ltd-Skiv Devescovi for the photos.

Yes, I was available to chase as well. I even felt conditions looked good for some significant weather as the surface wind was NE. My only concern at this time of year is the lack of surface heating. But that wasn't an issue as there was convergence to provide good lift.Ardmore would be less than 20km from central Auckland so a big opportunity to observe and photo a Tornado missed by us Steven

Aaron, if you want to chase up some of the TV3 footage drop an email to Joe, I forget his email but its on his site http://www.dvp.co.nz Joe does freelance work for TV3 news as a cameraman as well as chasing storms here and in the US, I think he's done some filming with Mr Mackley and others in the US for tv documentaries.

Not sure, but the condensation funnel looks near ground level.Did the funnel touch the ground?
A couple of defnitions here.
A tornado is defined as a vortex extending from a cloud to ground level. The condensation funnel may or may not be in contact with the ground. The appearance of the condensation funnel is governed by the amount of moisture and the scale and intenisty of the vortex. This funnel is not the only visual sign of a tornado. Often a debris cloud is observable on the ground.
A funnel cloud is the condensation funnel of a vortex that extends from a cloud but the vortex is not in contact with the ground.

Hi there, I was in NZ recently and took a few photos at Seaview Nurseries and had a look at the tornado track. Pics can be found on my web site as per below. Very luck that not more people were at the site at the time.
Cheers

Thanks guys, yeh those dust storm images are amazing. Had a few here over the years of course, a lot of our frontal bands and squalls raise a lot of dust from the NW of Victoria, some of the events were captured during my chases listed here http://www.stormplanet.com/specialevents.htm
