From my facebook contacts it appears there were two. One team had put a probe down in the path but did not manage to escape in time & got caught. Have seen video, will go back for a gander, hopefully it isn't in Facebook, but another more sharing friendly media.

I can only imagine the thoughts going through his mind at that time. Getting in front of a tornado to put probes in it's path? No thanks.

Retrieving the data from their probe. Impressive. They were unlucky to be caught, lucky to come through it ok & are genuinely working towards obtaining valuable data.

23 killed in eastern Alabama tornado today. Footage of damage looks atleast EF4.

SPC issued an MD for the tornado about an hour before it developed. Very good forecasting.

GFS sounding for the area where the deadly tornadic storm developed. Not a huge amount of CAPE but shear looks fairly impressive. This sounding looks quite typical of the Dixie Alley set ups , no capping and rather tall skinny CAPE. NWS confirmed an EF4 rating.

Yes, fast storm motions with these set ups. The tornadic supercells can travel long distances too if they can anchor on a boundary such as the warm front.

Another severe set up in the south again this weekend, possible tornadoes.

170 MPH! (270 kph) and they still had 9 minutes warning.

Ok to clarify! Since I've had some err not so friendly comments. I was unable to read the article properly, due to a combination or geographical limitations and some others created by my adblocker.

The wind speeds of the tornado where in the 170MPH or 270 km/hr range.

The movement of the tornado was more in the range of 50 to 55 MPH or 80 to 90 km/hr.

Sorry for any confusion I've caused.

Latest update from the Climate Prediction Centre for May/June. Wetter than normal. A favourable signal for storms over the plains.

Amazing storm for this early in the season, fingers crossed for a few of those in late May.

In other news, I've had two people pull out of my group for this years chase. Chasing with just two people is not the end of the world, but it would be great to offer the chance to anyone on here that might be interested. 18 May - 7 June, in and out of Dallas. Flight prices are pretty good at the moment.

I see AirNZ have been doing their Houston $1250 deal this week.

I definitely won't be chasing this year as work commitments mean I can't chase in May.

Na you can do better than that. Air nz had 999 return Houston in the last week of March. Then this week it was extended through travel agents. Can still get 999 with flight centre.

I’m 50:50 about going. May still pick up one of those cheap tickets. Sale ends 8th.

I'm going to Italy in August so can't do storm chasing this year, I will make next years holiday a US storm chasing trip. I should add Italy can get some nice thunderstorms so hopefully I will see some action while there.
