Re: General March Weather
Both GFS and EC are showing a deformed and severed subtropical jet and an upper tropospheric cold breach around the Vanuatu region in a weeks time. The tropics above NZ could become very lively at the end of March, start of April if they verify.

Re: General March Weather
So I am in WA for a wedding and what do I have here....a nice little thunder shower. Heard 5 rumbles. Only had to fly to the other side of Australia to hear thunder for the first time since about December.

Re: General March Weather
I'm in Shannon at the moment after attending my brother-in-laws funeral in Upper Hutt last Friday.
Here's photo I took late this afternoon of banner or blanket cloud moving across the Tararuas.

The sea temps have certainly crept up again and the warmt extends to right onshore now. Large areas of +3C anomaly both West and East.

Re: General March Weather
It would seem not. Nothing in the media, no CBs or TCu in the metars, and the dynamics today wouldn't normally support funnel clouds or landspouts. Possible, but not likely. I suspect what you saw might have looked like a funnel from a distance, but wasn't in reality. Given how clouds twist and change their forms so easily and rapidly, its an easy mistake to make. [And I'm not trying to be picky by making this comment, its just that like it or not, this forum is a form of record which will be referenced by people looking back, and its value depends on it being an accurate record, as much as possible.]

Re: General March Weather
Interesting very localised weather in the area this evening. Went out for my usual walk, and about 300-400m down the street from here noticed the dark clouds brushing past, and the wind starting gusting from the E (estimate around 35 km/h).
Was checking my weather site from my phone to see what the wind was reaching - nope nothing at all back at home, just a gentle breeze. About 800m from home heard the rain roaring in the distance for a couple of minutes, then got caught in a deluge which lasted about 5 minutes (thankfully found good shelter under a large tree).
Then on the return part of my loop it went from water pouring down the drains to dry concrete in about 5 or 6 minutes of walking. Returned home and not a drop for the garden

Re: General March Weather
Latest EC run has NW gales of up to 100-120kmh for the Canterbury plains on Tuesday then a decent southerly change with a good quick drink of 20-30mm for widespread areas of Canterbury, will be a decent amount of soil moisture leading into winter if that eventuates Nice weather for the Sheffield Show today as well, hopefully it gets up to the expected 22C high so we can have an ice cream!

Got back home today from up north and found 43mm in the rain-gauge
I didn't think we had that much rain whilst we were away?
