Massive storm in West Auckland - near constant thunder, tons of lightening, and now getting hit with hail

Must be snowing through Arthur's Pass, still open but chains essential. Porters will shut I'd expect

Looks like the low centre is somewhere between Chch and there (Kaikoura), we are at 986 and briefly in the shade of the peninsula as the wind starts to turn southerly. Very heavy rain in South Canterbury and some high numbers modelled for Chch from midnight. We’ve had some downpours already. I note MetService have upgraded the rain watch for the plains and city to a warning: https://www.metservice.com/warnings/sev ... r-warnings
Edit - I was wrong about the shadow, another downpour just arrived from the northeast!

Well snow falling in Fairlie from a source. Given its altitude some may have egg on there face after this is done. From all the models and data ive seen this was always a good likelyhood. Will be interesting now to see how low it reaches.

Wow. Already falling in Fairlie at 300 metres! Cold air doesn't peak until Saturday morning. Could be a crazy night for some.

Re: First Major Winter Storm of 2019
Looks like the low centre has crossed around cheviot area, it was off the coast of greymouth an hour ago thats how fast the alps shifted it east.
This will feed a more S-SW flow into canterbury, reducing the chance of sheltering from banksy and increasing the overall area to the whole region, not just Ashburton north.
Just typing this and man that rain was heavy very intense with small hailstones mixed in. If it keeps up like this we will have 60mm in no time.

MS site @ Kaikoura now 983 hPa with gravity wave clouds appearing to its north around the interacting jets. It's showtime.
