Few strikes now being picked up northeast of Great Barrier island
Some Thundery Cb out there over the warm water, I see a peak of 7 strikes a min on the Tracker.
Dew points are on the low side, 10C and with limited sun shine it's hard to see anything interesting happening over land today.
Ha it says on MS periods or rain tomorrow for canterbury but if you visit this page http://www.stuff.co.nz/weather.html it says heavy showers for CHCH good but also click on Kaiakoura it says periods of rain with hail so what really is the jit rain or showers? .
Fog here very thick as well since 4pm but guess wat reverse the Waimak this time to this side with the fog it was fine in CHCH all day I believe not until you hit the Waimak the fog rolls on.
Cheers

You don't get forcasted heavy showers for Christchurch, so this event could prove quite interesting
..stay toooooooned
Off to Mt Grey this week till Thursday marking track etc should be interesting probly a wet week but hey dats part of the fun.
Take layers of warm clothing if you're up there tomorrow - MetService is predicting rain, hail and snow to 600m in Canterbury tormorrow. Mt Grey reaches about 970m at its highest.

The next front looks as though it has more punch according to the 9pm MetService sattelite picture tonight JohnGaul

Some very nice Cumulus Congestus around the region though
Hopefully Friday and Saturday will deliver.
I see Met is predicting snow on the Lindis Pass road, down to as low as 500m in the morning. It doesn't seem at all likely, but I guess they have to play it safe.
Maybe some light snow to 1000m at worst here in Canterbury tomorrow, that's all I can see. Gary, for you I think a few snow flurries to 900/800m in the morning then clearing during the afternoon.
Will be interesting to see what happens tomorrow, I'm not that confident of something happening due to alot of cloud cover but we'll see. If it's sunny or there is some sun before 'a southwesterly change' comes through here's hopping!
SST are something to consider which could induce something but then again it's over the sea! Out to the west of the West Coast has the hallmarks of thunderstorms tomorrow!
Cloud has thickened this morning, but so far no rain in central Chch. 9AM radar did show rain further south in Canterbury, so this system isn't a total fizzer.
For some unknown reason MetService hasn't updated its forecasts yet.

800m Horay! Sort of......hehe.
The latest radar shows some heavy'ish showers in South Cantebury, would be good if they could get up here! Should be around 7/8pm if so I think. That might deliver a couple to 5cm of snow around 900/800m here in Cantab.
Only Drizzle here today had reports from others said there was heavier rain in CHCH this evening but none of the sort out here. .
I see that change must be going through East north island now some strikes off the coast on trackers and even some earlier between Cook Strait.
Looks like some heavy stuff on way for west of south isalnd next 3-4 days starting from Thursday be interesting to see how much is predicted to fall.
Cheers

Yes, that moist thick drizzly stuff but with the SW abaiting.
7.4mm to 11pm tonight.
Some distant sfrerics crackling away possibly from the stuff way out to the east.
The weather to the WE and possibly into next week looks 'boringly interesting'.
It is probable and looks likely that the weather systems could develop into something interesting but then the models do have a fizzing-out effect of anything interesting that could possibly happen
Forecast for Melbourne Issued at 0505 on Wednesday the 10th of August 2005
Wednesday
Partly cloudy with showers. Snow developing on the nearby hills and snow
flurries also possible in the more elevated suburbs. Local hail and thunder
possible. Moderate to fresh west to southwesterly winds.
Max 10
Yikes.. looks like this is bringing some very serious cold weather to SE Aus if Melbourne is getting possible snow flurries in elevated suburbs!
Melbourne shares the same latitude with us here in Hamilton... and last year with that cold surge Matamatarians observed snow on the higher tops of the Kaimais at around 800m.
Surely not for Melbourne???
Hobart's gonna cop it tonight with a high chance of snow

Melbourne isn't sheltered from cold south or southwest flows by a large elevated area like the central North Island high country shelters the Waikato and BOP. BTW snow settled at least as low as 500m on the Kaimai and Mamaku Ranges last year, as the highways over these ranges had snow on them.

A lot of Thunderstorms in the Tasman as that cold air gets out over warmer Ocean.
Yeh you are sure right about that Spwill some beaut's of thunderstorms off both west of south and north island noching up over 130 strikes off west coast of SI. Now there's a sighn of convection over seas.
The blast certainly deliverd to NSW today with snow reports and he coldest temps recorded ever as Brendon said tonight .
It's anyone's guess as to what this low will bring id say keep an eye and ear out for it .
Cheers
