Re: General July Weather
Yes looks mild and disturbingly dry. A real crisis for the snow industry looming soon I fear

Most club ski areas aren't going to be round in 10years time with the current rate of snow level rise.

Re: General July Weather
My 2 cents worth for July.
Subtropical moisture is finally arriving around the NZ longitudes, a few days later than expected from mid June observations but it should deliver some decent totals to parts of the NI and SI this week as per TT's new thread https://www.weatherforum.nz/phpBB3/view ... f=2&t=5982.
The stratosphere and troposphere are starting to couple. A warming signal in the stratosphere has been developing through June, especially over the mid latitudes. A mild warming occurred over parts of the polar cap around 2 weeks ago. Ensembles are now showing negative zonal wind anomalies around the polar jet stream in 10 days time. The SAM index is now projecting to become negative in around 10 days from now. An aggressive outbreak of upper polar lows and strong fronts is becoming more likely in mid July when stronger long wave troughs propagate towards NZ.

Just glancing the latest gfs, looks like a heavy warm advective snow event possible for the volcanic plateau end of the week. Snow on Canterbury foothills as well.

Re: General July Weather
It feels weird that it rained today with the pressure around 1030 hPa. Can't be a very common occurrence.

Re: General July Weather
Temperature 16.5°C here at present, was around 13° a couple of hours ago.
Sounds like a gusty wind outside, cloudy sky.

17.9 degrees today. My record is 18.1 back in 2012 and it was on the 28th of the month. Not the start!

Rained overnight but cleared away to be a nice sunny warm day for July.

They will say they prefaced that statement with "remember we're a long way out" so they have effectively managed people's expectations...it's a fine line that's for sure, everyone wants to be the first to forecast a big event on social media!melja wrote: Fri 05/07/2019 11:56 Canterbury weather updates pushing a story about snow to sea level in chch mid month, very unprofessional so far out!
