Outlook, fine

A brief shower in Chch very early this morning (probably about dawn), only measuring 0.2mm at the Hillmorton station. Barometer went up and the wind (albeit light) changed to the south. High cloud looks different to the northwest cloud of recent days - somewhat fluffier and more glaciated, indicating a cooler airmass. (though according to Gary's latest post, the return of warmer air isn't far away)

Fine after some morning cloud ,light winds, 16C.
The Low has taken a more Westerly track keeping the shower cloud out in the Tasman.

I notice that sun is getting hotter now. This weekend is looking fine also.
Should be milder too.

Its turning from a G class star to an "F"

Anyway was a much improvement this afternoon from whats been of late

Yes Andy I believe it was rather warm as I was in Omakua I think thats how it's spelt

yes I was doing the rail trail started at Hyde on Monday and finished today at Cylde

biked through Alexandra today lovly day there but back in chch boring low cloud weaher here now.
Check out photograph section on the forum within next few hours Iam going to put up some photo's John you would enjoy some of this too.

Hi Jase.
It's spelt Omakau (Oh Ma cow) and it's Clyde noT Cylde, that dam town

Haven't done the trail by byclycel (bike) yet although I did travel to Alexandra in a Vulcan Railcar in the 1970s along the same route. It had railway lines laid then

otherwize, it would of been a real bumpy ride to Alex especially with the railcar trying to negatiate those corners

Anyway, here is a photo I took of the railcar at Alex

Probably warmer than when I did the trail last December - on the 2nd half of the trail through the Maniatoto (during the cold southerly outbreak a week before Xmas) I had intermittant hail showers, and sleet fell in Ranfurly on the evening I stayed there. Strong southerly wind slowed my finish into Middlemarch the next day.

Morning all..
Looks like a cold change will move up New Zealand on Thursday, according to GFS.

Another fine warm day today, slight frosts in the region, 3c at the moment at Hamilton AP, and it seems only Tongariro NP is frosty in this great nation. However I see Christchurch is sitting on 14c at 6am!

Could get quite warm in Canterbury on Tuesday ahead of the cold front.

Cloud rolling in tomorrow afternoon here

Clear and calm in Aucks. But last nights sounding showed low level instability which I am betting will still be there today. So skies should cloud up a bit with the chance of a weak shower as happened yesterday.

Tokoroa must've felt summery yesterday, reaching a balmy 19C. Could be an August record for them.

it's spring for sure 18C at the moment and thats with a NE wind NW will arrive later i would imagine

Just thought id take a few spring like pictures lots of that pollen showing up on the outside furnature hmmm thats the only annoying thing about spring.
Slight chance of thunder with that change on Wednesday which would be good.

The 19C on the screen was not the one by Lake Taupo, though Taupo and other Waikato/BOP centres were only a degree or so cooler than Tokoroa. 19C is an August max you might expect in a norwester in the east or the far north (Kaitaia was also 19C yesterday), but not elsewhere in NZ. (highest I can recall in Rotorua in winter was about 17C)

Yeah nice day. 20C with a 6 degree dewpoint and light winds, NE on the coast, NW inland so that moisture layer will be shallowish I would think.

I don't understand though, Timaru has a 20km southerly, perhaps the lee trough has formed into a small low on the coast due to the warm weather? Upper air (500mb) is around -20 so not cold but not incredibly warm either.

Guess we'll see on the animation of the isobars tonight on TV or the 6pm isobar chart.

From Jeffsweather site, a reminder that this time of the year isn't always this it is today in Chch. (and remember August 2004's cold and snow) Another day just like yesterday

, with thin layer of high cloud, a gentle breeze, and temps in the high teens.

Here this weekend it's a (temporary, I hope) reversion to "type" with a "NW spoiler" - gusty, irritating wind, scudding lowish cloud and little sun today.

Had some unforecast brief rain in central Chch overnight or near dawn - I can only tell because the ground is damp. Must've been an isolated as nothing was recorded at Hillmorton and the radars have showed nothing near Chch. Otherwise today looks like another mild one like the weekend, but maybe cloudier.

In Templeton the shower lasted 25 mins from about 6:30, fairly heavy at times with 0.6mm recorded. Followed by a very colourful sunrise.

A second day of highish thin grey overcast and cooler temps here in the Mackenzie, but nothing at all of interest occurring though, weather-wise.

I was surprised to hear rain on the roof this morning. Not enough to tip the gauge but enough to dampen the concrete. Only lasted about 20 mins from about 6:45. Colourful sunrise, nice to watch (glance at from time to time

) while cycling to work.
