Looks like spring is here for Canterbury. Lots of wind and very little moisture in the coming days. West Coast will have some fun and games as will Southland folk

Just below 2C on my station. Had to defrost the car this morning, maybe only the 2nd or 3rd time I've had to do that the whole winter

Re: General August Weather
I also am liking Thursday's chances of Thunder, the Upper streamline analysis is something to behold with the longwave directing the subantartic jet to join up with the sub tropic jet.
Some incredibly strong winds aloft will be measured over Tasmania over the next 72 hours, the leading cold front in the western Tasman being quite a Lightning producer at present.
Thursday is when we have the jet sliding over Northern New Zealand, in particular the exit region of the jet, which typically invigorates any convection that forms in that region.
The jet extends from 450-400hpa onwards but is still evident from 650hpa +, so there is a considerable amount of air being drawn up.

GFS is showing a warm front moving south over the upper North Island later tomorrow. That may support Isolated thunderstorms and looking like brief heavy falls of rain, more particularly in the east.

Re: General August Weather
With the chilly weather over NZ recently looking like August temps will end up cooler than July. That will certainly be the case for Auckland's maximums.

A nice 28mm with last nights warm front brings August's total to 130mm. The first month of 2019 to exceed the local average.

Some lightning occurred out in the Hauraki Gulf early this morning.
Thundery potential tomorrow starts early morning with a front coming in from the west before dawn.

Auckland council gauge near Cornwall Park picked up 43mm, including 28mm in the hour between 9-10pm. Quite a localised downpour by the looks of it

A small convergence zone snaked from the Hibiscus coast into Auckland between 9 and 10pm last night. For once I was in the right spot

Some decent convection going on over Amberley at the moment, in particular one cloud is going up at a rate of knots.

Re: General August Weather
Its like GFS has had a complete reversal on its 10 day model overnight. A series of Tasman lows has been completely replaced by predominately high pressure for the duration. Remarkable flip flip really
