Tasman low and cold air collision September 7-9
Alluded to in the stratospheric warming thread, GFS, UKMO and EC are both modelling a very cold airmass to arrive on Friday followed by a Tasman low bumping into it. EC and UK are further north than GFS at this stage.

Re: Tasman low and cold air collision September 7-9
MetService now mentioning possible low-level snow for Canterbury and Marlborough in their Outlook, but plenty of uncertainty around this one as usual. Looks wet for the North Island.
Edit - a ridge of high pressure is keeping the southerly and Tasman low apart, so not much to write home about.

Time to re-activate the thread
It's certainly fizzing out in the Tasman between the warm and cold fronts. Rain totals may also add up over a couple over days on the NI from tomorrow morning.

Interaction between warm and cold air over the North Island on Monday could be interesting.

Re: Tasman low and cold air collision September 7-9
Typical media... Metservice issues a severe thunderstorm watch (not a warning), and now NZ Herald is reporting a severe thunderstorm warning has been issued instead
Edit: they fixed it pretty quickly thankfully

Hope it makes it for you guys. Many many days living with hope in Hamilton and watching those lightning filled fronts come off NSW only to die two thirds to NZ over the Tasman.
