Brief icy flick
A lovely sunny day in Chch, even if the temperature is only about average for the time of year. Tonight it should change to more wintry weather with a short spell of cold showers, maybe hail, and snow to 400m (level predicted by MetService). I don't see any thunder with this one, and should clear up pretty smartly tomorrow. North Island should then get the cold blast, but should be short-lived as well.
After weeks of mild westerly type weather, a southerly to remind us that it's still winter, even though it should be a brief outbreak.

Yes 400m sounds about right, freezing level getting down to 500m tonight.
Still warm over upper North Island, 16c in Rotorua, 17c here, 18c in Tauranga and Whangarei, 19c from the SE fohn in Whakatane, guessing it could may well be 22c in Kawerau
East coast of the North Island late next week should reach the low twenties easily

Low cloud bellowed in aboot mid afternoon. Light rain at 6pm now heavy 2mm an hour stuff. Temp dropped to 4.9C and falling slowly.
It will be bloody cold at the rugby tommorrow night. At this rate it might be the last test we see down here. We are so apathetic down here.
I'll keep you informed of any flurries that may appear

There is no such thing as bad weather, just the wrong clothes.

Yes sad news about Carisbrook. Looks as all test matches will be around the Auckland area with the occasional one in Wellington.Fujita Phil wrote:Low cloud bellowed in aboot mid afternoon. Light rain at 6pm now heavy 2mm an hour stuff. Temp dropped to 4.9C and falling slowly.

Lancaster Park will probably be the only SI venue for rugby tests?
....anyway still fine here...no sign of the southerly. The ENE have died out.
The 6pm radar dosen't show anything.

My Aunt emailed me about 20 minutes ago from Palmerston (abut 40km north of Dunedin) - the southerly has reached there with a little rain. Palmerston is quite alot more sheltered from southerlies than Dunedin.
The change should reach Chch by about Midnight I guess, but I'm not sure how fast this change is actually travelling.

What little breeze there has been was NW all day, then it went SW for a time this evening (6 - 8:30 PM) but it's NW again. Cloud overhead but I'm not expecting anything interesting to happen, as far as the weather goes.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote:It arrived here at 2045hrs with low cloud sratus. ...now we have to put up with boring anticyclonic conditions of 103o hPa plus which can lead to gloomy days, I'm afraid to say

We received a wee bit of sleet overnight and there's a fine dusting of snow above 900m in the southern Mackenzie but that was about the extent of it. I believe the Dunstan Ranges may have split and channeled the flow out to the divide.Jasestrm wrote:BRRR southerly really biting out there now arrived about 9pm but has now got stronger gusts around 40kmh and rain has just started.
Some big drops in there too almost could be mistaken for sleet but dreams will flow on.
Cheers
JASON.
