Main front is here now. Quite heavy rain, but no lightning. Quite tame compared to this afternoon's storms.

Sure hope we can get at least 10mm but hope starting to fade a little looking at the radar. Been almost 8 weeks now since the last decent rain

Few shots from last night and this morning, got heaps of video too but no time to edit. Not the best show visually but certainly the most frequent and long lasting I have seen in NZ

Second storm of the day now to hit us. Also had a storm scrape by us this afternoon. This storm now on the main front has really just suddenly sparked up into life in the past 15 mins since it was about to hit us and now over us. Very heavy rain in it.

Late to the party re the storms over Wellington Sunday morning. Was an amazing night. First line passed through at 3am but was one isolated cell with heavy rain and some impressive but short lived lightning and thunder.
Then just after 4am the sky started lighting up to the west with flashes every 10-20 seconds. Did not abate till well after 6am. Well worth the 2 hours of no sleep!!
The pics below are stills from a video capture at around 430am. Rain radar at time of video. I am located on the Miramar peninsula, so was a few kms to the south of the main band of rain, but the display of fork lightning right across the sky above me was extraordinary! Video stills were taken from that I posted on twitter.

There was quite a bit of storm activity with that front late last night early this morning in the north but Auckland missed it.
Grey Lynn recorded 5.4mm over the weekend from isolated showers.

Not really disappointed here. Great lightning show from between about 10pm to at least 2am this morning in the outer Gulf and around the Coromandel - probably at least a couple of flashes every minute - barely audible though. Plus a few sparks and rumbles late yesterday arvo. 5mm here - mostly during that late arvo event.

It certainly did fire up north and east overnight with the front. Timing not quite right for Auckland but at least I heard a couple of claps yesterday. The year of near misses continues with only 2.6mm over the weekend.

there has been lots of near misses this year. the month with most thunderstorms would have to be august. last month we did get a few. but they were fairly isolated. im hope we not getting into a thunder draught.

Re: Thunderstorms North Island December 7 and 8
Lightning activity high because of good lapse rates and high surface moisture being drawn in.
When the front hit land overnight, the jet was a bit too strong, storms did form sure enough, but the tops got taken off 30 min later which stopped developing any longer lasting multicell storms.
So when you have a very vigorous upper level (like in situ above), the updraft simply cant keep up and air starts mixing. But when the upper level flow backs off in the exit/entrance region thats when it explodes.
Good setup and very nice to hear the thunder again.
