Canberra broke it's all time record today too, with 44.0°C. Old record was 42.2°C in 2013.

http://www.bom.gov.au/nsw/observations/nswall.shtml

The 69.8°C reading at Cabramurra looks to be fire-related with gusts to 128 km/h at the time.

Would that be the temperature with the fires?

I took a screenshot of the Cabramurra observations for posterity as they are incredible and must have been influenced by a nearby fire. Indeed, the NSW office of BOM issued a statement to that effect - the site ended up between intense pyrocumulonimbus on one side and new fire ignitions on the other. it seems to have survived as the readings go back to normal after an hour or so. The maximum was given as 69.8°C on the daily readings page for NSW.

The monsoon trough is playing it's part in changing atmospheric moisture level above large parts of the continent. EX TC Blake is feeding an atmospheric river into SE OZ in front of a cold front on the latest water vapour image. The positive IOD and SSW driven weather pattern is on the way out, which will be a huge relief for many.

I see there is this FB post that being share about the fires..saying ...and summer has only just started
but people do not realise that the second half of summer for OZ has more monsoonal rain/monsoonal lows and tropical cyclone rain and more easterly winds onto NSW
i.e gone are the drier spring westerly patterns (normally)

Yes, correct. NSW & QLD traditionally receive the moist rich airflow from now on.

Vic, S.A and Tasmania have had some of their most devastating fires in February (Ash Wednesday, Black Saturday), so their fire season from this point will depend on the follow up monsoonal surges into the southern hemisphere. Time will tell.

270mm in the 24 hrs to 9am today at Carnegie, WA from Ex-Blake. Huge amount for the very arid desert there.

We are receiving some welcoming very heavy rain right now over Darwin with the monsoonal low, will help a lot with the depleted water table in the rural area.

Some wet weather coming up for eastern parts of Australia, an incoming trough with a moisture feed. The 2nd half of January could see below average tempertaures (overall) for South Australia and Victoria.

With the dryness of the ground with the recent bushfires, there would be significant run-off, of water, which could be as disastrous as the wildfires themselves. :-k

Smashing monsoon here now, lots of thunder last night as well

Typical northwest monsoon sounding in place now with deep westerlies to 200 hPa, and very high precipitable water values.
