Well, what an interesting morning it's been up here.
We had really heavy rain from about 2am in Kerikeri, and as I rolled over and opened my eyes at 6.30am this morning, I managed to catch the most amazing forked lighting i'd ever seen.. All pinks and purples.. The noise shook the whole house, all the dogs barked, my cat put holes in my leg from being so scared.. Then after that there was nothing for another 20 mins, till a nice flash of sheet lightning and a roll of thunder from the south.. I tell you, it's just teasing me. Dont have to go into work till this afternoon and I wanted to have a nice sleep in!!! Typical

Excellent stuff! They can miss out a lot during summer but certainly not spring!

Very heavy showers at North Shore now.
Good to see the MetService updating their urban forecasts, with thunder being mentioned

heres the 11am satellite pass. This shows quite clearly the Cb line that just hit west auckland with thunder and lightning.
as brian says it has weakened a bit now, but there could be some stuff behind it..

The auckland tracker is picking up fresh strikes over central NI now, averaging around 6 per minute....

BIG loud thunder in Central Hamilton within the last 5 minutes!
1.45 R/R shows rain band weakening but pretty hefty Cb's.convection developing over Northern Waikato.. so it's making up for that!

Tracker is showing a lot of Lightning South of AK.
Front is through here but we still have some nice looking build ups around.
Photo shows Frontal Showers.

Photo-Frontal shower South of Auckland early afternoon.
Its a shame that Front came through so early, better chance of Storms if they come through about 4 or 5 pm.

Yes, timing is everything with thunderstorms. Front came in to early.
Just didn't get the prefrontal surface heating.
The last two summers have been duds for convection around Auckland. Hopefully this coming summer delivers.

We got some heavy showers in Tauranga round 5.30pm, but no hint of thunder & lightning that I observed.

Thunder in the west just went on and on and on and on and on and on and on and on.. you get the picture!! From 2.30 to 3.15
Very hard to see lightning. Too bad the conditions were 'scungy' rather than the nice clean convection, like on August 25. Not a good day for photography.. here's what I could achive.
Cheers!
