Pretty impressive northwest cloudband enroaching over northern Australia now bringing some patchy rain and plummeting daytime temps - going to be some May low daytime maximum records broken probably!

Quite a cool change coming over southern Australia too - all in all the whole continent looks set to be cooler than normal for the first time in quite a while!

Australian Government Bureau of Meteorology issues Western Australia Severe Weather Warning:
Weather Situation:
A tropical system is combining with a cold front and trough to produce a vigorous weather system that will affect the length of the west coast during today and Monday. A deep low pressure system is expected to pass near the South West of the state tonight, with the possibility of other lows forming along the trough as it impacts western parts of WA during today. Widespread severe weather is expected from later this morning. Dangerous weather may occur in some parts, particularly in the vicinity of the lows.

I have members of extended family in Perth: am watching this with considerable interest.

Heavy rainfall and destructive winds have caused widespread damage in Western Australia.

Ex-Tropical Cyclone Mangga collided with a cold front, resulting in what was described as a "once-in-a-decade" storm.

Back to normal programming again of a warming continent, especially in northern Australia.

35.0°C here today at Darwin Airport... smashed the previous June record of 34.6°C set in 2016

Feels like we jumped a whole three months today!

Very unusual. I guess the NZ equivalent of that would be snow blanketing somewhere like Nelson or Blenheim.

Tasmania just recorded it's coldest ever temperature of -14.2C overnight in Liawenee on the central plateau (1000m asl) - smashing the old record by a full degree!

That airmass was particularly cold. Given the location (and altitude) of Liawenee, it was only a matter of time before it broke the state minimum record of -13.0°C set at Butlers Gorge, Shannon HEC and Tarraleah Village on 30/6/1983.

BOM produces masses of weather and climate data and has updated spreadsheets on all of its climate sites.

The site at Liawenee has only been operational since 2001 and has recorded a minimum of -10°C or below in the five months from May to September with the old record being -12.2°C on 9/7/2013. The old August record was -11.1°C on 8/8/2015.

There was a comparison site which ran from 1984 to 2009, but its lowest minimum was -10.4°C on 18/6/1992.

Looking at the records of other sites in Tasmania, I would think something like -15°C to -17°C is easily reachable at this site under the right conditions.

A tale of two halves for the next week as a Tasman low and GAB high sling up Antarctic air over the southeast; thermal lows intensifying in the northwest, but no convective showers just yet - just some patchy light rain with the NW cloud band.

Dewpoint temperature up to 24/25 in the area here this morning, pretty early for that!

Looks like a new Australian August record yesterday at Yampi Sound, WA with 40.7°C, smashing the 40.0 at Kalumburu in 1970.

86.8mm here for Sep so impressive start to the Wet. Three good storms. Climo average is 15.8mm, median is 6mm. It's like we're already in October.

Two lack lustre wet seasons in a row so hoping for a good one. The last strong La Nina was in 2010/2011 and we had a record wet with 2926mm at Darwin Airport. A couple of stations in the northern suburbs ticked over 3m.

74/75 was another good Nina but different:

Very punchy storm yesterday just across the border with gusts to 118 km/h:

Ditto. We can go there ok, getting back, well that's problematic. Hope NZ Government opens up the border to some states of Au sooner rather than later. Would love to have been in Queensland the last few days. Tomorrows not looking too shabby either.

Nice long lived tornadic supercell just off Sydney this morning. Classic hook echo with probably a strong tornado there.

Explosive day ahead for SE Queensland and NE NSW - very large hail and destructive winds are the main threats.
5am Brisbane sounding depicted a loaded gun with strong shear.
