That will be fantastic when it comes on line
I agree.
A good boost for the Rakaia and Southland radars.
As it is brand new, will it be more hi-tec than the other MS radars.?
It will be the same as the newer Metservice radar deployments. That being a Viasala Dual Polarized Doppler Radar. These radars are deployed at Mahia, Westland, Kaio, and Mamaku.
"Yesterday, the largest components of our new Otago radar made the trip across the Cook Strait. Look out for it over the coming days as it heads south!
Installation of the radar starts on site (20km NW of Dunedin) next week, and all going to plan the radar should be operable by the end of the year."
Looks like it is switched on. Hurrah.
Now we need some decent thunderstorms to see if it works
No mention about the new radar on MS website?
You would think there would something about it especially when it cost 2.8 million dollars to construct.
If there was one more added, where should it be? Southern side of central plateau to cover south Taranaki, taihape, manawatu? Or East cape? Or Tasman to cover top of south and into bottom of north.

Possibly not enough population there. Have heard a rumor Metservice are in discussion with a landowner in Klondyke area (Just NE of Port Waikato), no idea if there is any truth in it.

Difintely need a radar there and it will provide improved coverage for Auckland too.

I think with the new Otago radar we are now quite well equipped as far a radar coverage of the country is concerned.
Population wise, another place where coverage could be improved could be the west coast of Waikato?
Maybe also around the Fiordland area?
