Re: General December Weather
Tomorrows prospects are interesting, a big factor will be cloud cover as we have no cap and any early convection will hinder setup somewhat.
Since 500hpa is quite cold around -21/22 degrees, hail is probable/likely. Size will depend on decent shear, BOP seems to have the most with a SFC southerly progressing up throughout the afternoon, converging with a light N/NW then interacting with an upper NW.
Hail accumulation is more likely to be significant factor to consider tomorrow as any decent showers develop they will tend to drop hail in the payload.
Will have a look at prospects tomorrow again to see if its worth taking a drive.

Re: General December Weather
35mm here over the last few days. Didn't get as much as I thought we would yesterday, but heavy showers overnight has brought 12mm so far today. IN the very early hours of Christmas morning, managed to get 2.6mm of rain in 10 minutes which is heavy for here! YTD still well below average but looking better at 385mm.

Re: General December Weather
The cold pool is timed nicely with peak heating.
A risk of severe hail in the western Bay of Plenty this afternoon I think. Dewpoint in Tauranga this morning looks good 10C.
gfs 500mb temp chart 1pm.

Re: General December Weather
Shower movement on the radar over BOP shows a NW flow there...is that surface or upper level?

Another trough across NZ for early New Year, perhaps we will get something interesting from that one.

Re: General December Weather
Thunder shower here. Shame it came through so early in the day.
I’m tempted to follow it into western BOP.

Re: General December Weather
Will see, this stuff that's developing now is now creating lots of cloud cover. Might not be able to see storms as well. Will probably decide at 2PM.jamie wrote: Sun 27/12/2020 12:35Tim will you chase into BOP?Tornado Tim wrote:Got Thunder here now.... Fairly early on, shows lapse rates are good.

Based on Himawari Vis there is an LLCC pass through North Waikato/South Auckland atm, this is causing early convergence with the southerly, this will move away to the east.

Re: General December Weather
The storm in north Waikato looks to have broad rotation with the radar showing it rotating around itself. Wonder if it will have low level tight rotation to form a super cell?

Re: General December Weather
Heaps of thunder near me at the moment. Even a tiny funnel formed a few times. Overall today has been nothing to write home about for here. Ive seen some people got hail and a lightning strike caught a swamp in hauraki on fire.

Feels like a cold night coming up. Perhaps dipping below 10, unusual for this time of year.
