Re: New Year Thunderstorms
Plenty of thunderstorms around the Wairarapa yesterday, saw a few CG's but as expected pretty messy. Today looking similar, less heating but stronger winds aloft, and convergence zone looks to be further north than where I was yesterday

Re: New Year Thunderstorms
Good point, however one would think with a risk of severe thunderstorms that they may increase their monitoring during the risk period.NZstorm wrote: Sun 03/01/2021 07:40Not sure how many people work at Met Service on the evening shift. No one was watching the radar.

Are the triggers the same today as they were yesterday? Wind convergence?

Not as good as yesterday's set up.darcyplumb wrote: Sun 03/01/2021 11:05 Are the triggers the same today as they were yesterday? Wind convergence?
The convergence today is in north otago/ south Canterbury. Mt peel might be a good spot again and timaru up to ashburton in evening.

Showers in Grey Lynn now.
Today's supercell potential looks to be eastern Wairarapa.
Mid Canterbury showing some shear but the moisture has cleared.

Hearing some very distant noises to the west... looks like central Auckland is more the sweet zone today

Looks quite impressive looking that direction. I see there's a PWS in Westmere that's already recorded 50 mm from the convergence line.David wrote: Sun 03/01/2021 12:45 Hearing some very distant noises to the west... looks like central Auckland is more the sweet zone today

Re: New Year Thunderstorms
Yes, last contact I had with Paul was just before Christmas in 2017, he had retired at that point. Sadly I've seen/heard nothing since. His insight would certainly be a welcome addition to the forum.dogmelon wrote: Sun 03/01/2021 10:57 I spose that Paul Mallinson dude has retired. His comments here were really interesting.
