Lots of power outages here but we weren't affected.
Winds sort of eased now. Blew our old TV Aerial down.

What I find interesting is why some NW gales can be really gusty, others not, today here its a steady wind and no gusts. Aug last year when we had many trees blown over, it was done by just single gust.

I see some private weather stations have recorded 133kmh gusts in south Canty!

Yes Grahams weather station here in Ashburton recorded 161km but I'm not sure how accurate that would be.Many trees and fences down here. Sent from my SM-A226B using TapatalkAwhituobs wrote:I see some private weather stations have recorded 133kmh gusts in south Canty!

Wind has ramped up big time here in Southern Christchurch all of a sudden. Furniture gone flying off the deck. Must be close to 100kmh out there.

And that's a wrap on Monday at Castle Hill. A day of steady rain and no wind to really speak of since 7am

Unscientifically and with no measurements to prove it, this gale seemed to me to be much worse than that of September 10, 2013.Dean. wrote: Mon 18/07/2022 18:08Yes Grahams weather station here in Ashburton recorded 161km but I'm not sure how accurate that would be.Many trees and fences down here.Screenshot_20220718-145951_Chrome.jpgAwhituobs wrote:I see some private weather stations have recorded 133kmh gusts in south Canty!

More [thankfully slight] damages to my own property this time.

I fear a catastrophic situation emerging in the Mackenzie Basin from what I'm reading on the social media channels. Otematata and Omararama in particular.
Meanwhile as at 2am the rain has certainly picked up at Castle Hill. Solid on our roof right now. Still no wind though

Yep not looking good in the Mckenzie. This rain and snow melt will effect the catchment on the southern side in North Otago in the Manuherekia valley. Significant flooding as well looking likely.Razor wrote: Tue 19/07/2022 01:55 I fear a catastrophic situation emerging in the Mackenzie Badin from what I'm reading on the social media channels. The latest from ECAN. Also the usual spots around Methven and the Rakaia Gorge are in flood (Dry Creek, Blackford Road).

My sources in Greenstreet (inland Of Ashburton) tell me that the Ashburton River is not far off the height it got to last year… the wind has gone but the flood threat is very real today for the people impacted by last year’s event.

Left Christchurch 13:30 and was being rather buffeted in 2.9m campervan. Patches of ‘significant turbulence’ in north Canterbury. Then lovely and warm around Kaikoura. Sea was incredibly calm there.
Biggest gusts were after dark between Blenheim & Nelson.

Morning sit rep at Castle Hill for our last day up here. Still calm, relatively mild. Partly cloudy with patchy blue sky. 70mm of rain since Sunday.
Its hard to call this anything extreme here, effectively no wind and a steady but not worrying rain event. All the real action has been away from here
