Re: General August Weather
Cracker day alright, a little SW flick tomorrow will spread showers up the south island but once that clears will have a run of very frosty nights and clear skies until atleast Monday. Nice to have some fine settled weather on a weekend for a changeRazor wrote: Wed 10/08/2022 11:50 Magnificent day here in Canterbury. yup
another atmospheric river from the tropics, which has been a trend since last November
and looks to continue this spring , with La Nina lingering, and the warm Indian over NW of Australia giving extra energy boost to MJO's as they migrate into the north Tasman

Re: General August Weather
My yard was a slushy mess after the frost this morning. The snowmelt will be hugely problematic with this too. Also to add that there was significant erosion of a number of stop banks along the Ashburton River last week.Richard wrote: Fri 12/08/2022 18:33 With each computer run its starting to looking worse in terms of rainfall numbers for Canterbury,

FBook post just gone up
"Seen from Ross Street [Opua] @12:26pm Tuesday 9th August" Same system gave us the first hail for the year and some very active vertical builds. Not surprised this dropped out the bottom.

Thanks CbFan - I'd almost forgotten about that one.
Wonder if it touched down?
It was also reported on TVNZ Weather that night as "a twister recorded about lunchtime just near Paihia"...

How much snow at the top? Went up there last summer, great views.
Blue dome skies in South Canterbury the last 2 days, noticably warmer in the sunshine compared to a month ago. Still patchy snow lying in shaded areas above 350-400m

Re: General August Weather
Metservice talking of possible red warnings for the rain coming this week. Big issues coming up for top of South Island and not good for ski fields.. Hopefully South Island fields with thick snow cover will hold up okay but looks like the end of any chance Ruapehu had of developing any sort of snow base this season.

Compared with the South Island snow, this is how bare the central North Island mountains are. This photo was taken yesterday next to Blue Lake on Tongariro, looking into Central Crater (1700 m elevation). I was shocked at how little snow there is. The warm rain coming this week will probably take away most of what's left. Not so many years ago the central volcanoes would usually be smothered top to bottom in winter snow by this time of year. Not now!

This season looking like the worst since 1998. Had yet to learn to ski then, but read about it.harleyb wrote:Compared with the South Island snow, this is how bare the central North Island mountains are.
