Provisionally a new national Tmin record for August...
https://twitter.com/NiwaWeather/status/ ... 6gyacrAAAA
I think Hamilton Aero has also easily beaten its highest Aug Tmin record of 13.6C set in 2010 from records since 1972.

Mt Ruapehu looking a sorry site. Mt Hutt looks to have lost a fair amount of snow as well.

Some of the photos I’ve seen are horrendous. Months and months of work to come to get the roads back to what they were. I see they’re also expecting a storm surge of up to 3 metres this afternoon. Tonight could be really rough with the rain coming back in. Red warning issued again.

Re: Mid August West Coast/ Nelson/ North Island flooding risk
Certainly looks like the worst hit areas are from Nelson city north, SH6, the outer Sounds and towards Havelock.
A google search for SH6 on "Farcebook" shows some incredible damage to the State Highway. Rai Valley groups also have lots of photos of slips and damage to roads.
The Rai River Gauge shows it was a very significant event in the area, so little wonder SH6 has suffered so badly. via http://hydro.marlborough.govt.nz/floodwatch/

Even taking a full 24hr period from 9am Thursday until 9am Friday, my station did not drop below 16.0CNev wrote:Provisionally a new national Tmin record for August...

Re: Mid August West Coast/ Nelson/ North Island flooding risk
finally this rain band has got a shove east from a new system that came across Aus
57mm here
but biblical amounts in high terrain places exposed to the north top of both islands, crazy
they will be pleased to see the sun the next couple of days
and a big high pressure coming in for the end of the month!
soil temperature is 15c here now...that's October readings!

Re: Mid August West Coast/ Nelson/ North Island flooding risk
The sudden jump in temp and humidity this week has been quite striking compared to last week's cold. Here in Palmy it's caused plenty of condensation on concrete surfaces indoors and out and last night biking home from work I saw this very cool example of what happens when warm humid air passes over cold water... A nice mist layer over the river.

Re: Mid August West Coast/ Nelson/ North Island flooding risk
Yes, Hamilton Aero also recorded a Tmin of 16.2C for the 24 hrs to 9am yesterday (and 14.8C the day before).
Ruakura's Tmin of 15.6C that day (and 15.0C today) also beat its highest Aug Tmin record of 14.3C set in 1955 from records since 1940.

Near 21C for the last few hours after the NW wind change here with an almost muggy 17C DP.
The 21C max isn't my august record high (21.4C 31 Aug 2017) but that was only a brief spike, this is continuous..
