The forecast is for a cold and wet southeasterly change over the South Island today, including some heavy falls in the hills, possibly with snow above about 800 metres. Well, the rain has already arrived in Christchurch today, but only intermittantly, and it's not yet cold. I think tonight's will see more action. What a change from the recent drought.

I see Christchurch was reported as 11C in the 7pm weather on TV1. I assume they are reporting the 10.7 at midnight, not really representitive of the days tepmeratures down here.
26.4mm since midnight in Hillmorton with only 4.8 for Sunday. Not as much wind from the low to the east as I expected today either.

The rain is good for Canterbury dairy farmers but is it helping the storage
situation at the Waitaki hydro Stations. Judging by satellite imagery, the
worst of the rain is offshore now. Just the odd coastal shower to come
this week now for Canterbury.
Fine and mild in the north today, but that looks set to change with the
development of a low to the north. Both Met Service and ken Ring
suggest just the odd shower over Northland from this low,
but I doubt their predictions. Looks wetter to me.

The rain seems to have eased a bit (now intermittant, not persistent), but the cold southerly has increased. I've noticed this before - the wind increasing as the rain eases. Must've been the deepening low to the east, my barometer having gone down somewhat.
As for the forecast heavy swells, I went out to New Brighton later this afternoon, and there was certainly a big surf. Hardly anyone on the beach, except for a few keen surfers. (ideal waves - who cares about the cold and wet if the waves are this good)

Yes,
26.1mm recorded here in Somerfield for the event. and it's still raining
Temperature here sitting around the 9C mark for most of the day.
Regarding the recent rain here, I like this quote from Bob Crowder
"Poor old Salinger he only has to say the Eastern drought will continue and
within days down it comes again."
I suspect more rain from next WE
