Re: General January Weather
A generally fine day with cloudy skies and sunny periods.
Today's maximum was 24.7C.
Like the above posting, NE winds are not as severe here as in Christchurch or other coastal cities and towns along the east coast of the SI.
NE here today but not as windy as it was in Temuka where we did some shopping today.
Interesting cloud forms to the south of here taken around 8pm.

Interesting cloud forms to the south of here taken around 8pm.
At the moment the blue blob on Rain Radar to the northwest of here is manifesting as some very dark-grey cloud; day has become quite dull.

Currently easterly, 21.1°C.

Re: General January Weather
Back to the clagg here with about 3 spits of drizzle with the southerly change. Skies looked promising before the clagg moved across with some hefty looking cloud forming but sadly to no avail.

Yes, back to the clagg this afternoon after the southerlies rolled in.
Cloudy weather prior to this with rather mild conditions and some Cu forms in the cloud.
21.4C before the southerly but it cooled right down to be 12.1C by 10pm.
4.3mm of drizzle showers for today.
Someone asked me today if today's change had something thing to do with the weather up north associated with Cyclone Hale. I told them that it was just a cold front moving up from the south and had nothing to do with the storms up north but a result of the anticyclones moving west to east south of NZ. They then asked me what an anticyclone was. I told them that was an area that don't get cyclones because of higher air pressure hence the name.

Re: General January Weather
The average maximum temperature for Auckland airport for 2022 was 20.7C. The last few days max temperatures at the airport have been, Tuesday 19.8C, Wednesday 21.8C and so far today 20.1C. It is very unusual to get that run of cool maximums in Auckland in January. I looked back at January last year for Auckland airport and it had an average maximum of 26.2C and a average min 16.9C which was a warmer than usual month.

Re: General January Weather
As a result of a tropical depression moving across the North Island from ex Cat 1 TC Hale and warmer or should say "Hotter" seas, another rather cold and dull claggy day eventuated from yesterday's cold front. Only 15.4C for today but it was nice and sunny if you ventured SW over the Burkes Pass a lovely fine day eventuated past there and over the McKenzie district.
Had to have the heat pump on tonight.

I see Auckland making headlines for low sunshine hours.. Must say its been pretty good down here in Christchurch for January so far, only missing the really hot days. There has been only 1 day in Jan over 30c, plenty of sunshine though and only 10mm of rain

21/22C maximums here the last 4 days. Certainly below average for mid Jan!

Be good to compare the two cities average temperature over the same period even though Auckland has been cloudier than usual.JP. wrote: Fri 13/01/2023 15:20 I see Auckland making headlines for low sunshine hours.. Yes pity MS don’t record averages. I’d much rather enjoy a sunny 21c day than a rainy 25c day though

Pretty sure it would be still be higher overall for Auckland, the average min for Christchurch aero this month looks to be about 12.5 vs 17 for Auckland aero.Dean. wrote: Fri 13/01/2023 17:19 Be good to compare the two cities average temperature over the same period even though Auckland has been cloudier than usual.
I see there’s quite a marine heatwave off the west coast and Fiordland regions at the moment - apparently up to 23C (6 degrees above normal)

Re: General January Weather
Another rather cloudy day but much brighter than yesterday with blue skies out to the east along the coast.
Today's maximum was 19C.
Interesting about the warm seas off the West Coast.
Maybe that would be responsible for the warm temperatures they have been having over there during the recent cyclonic period?

We love Auckland because it does stay warm up here.JP. wrote: Fri 13/01/2023 18:37 Yes pity MS don’t record averages. I’d much rather enjoy a sunny 21c day than a rainy 25c day though![]()

The average temperature is worked out by using the maximum and minimum temperature which is available at Metservice.

Re: General January Weather
This week here there was not even a peek of sun three full days, which would be notable even in winter when days much shorter. When sun returned yesterday it was like being dropped onto a different planet. Dec started out very cloudy but ended up sunnier than average. Quite possible this month will pull up to near average, not even half way through yet.

A fine sunny day eventuated at last with a maximum temperature of 25.7C with moderate easterly winds this afternoon.
Some weak instability to the west along the foothills.

Only 2 days this month have reached 25C here. December recorded 16 days, so this month has certainly been surprising in that regard

Re: General January Weather
Yeah, odd isn't it. Marine heatwave again, the context of the past few Januaries, yet having such a mild summer so far. Overnight lows are up but something is capping the daytime warming. I suspect ample water in the ground is one factor along with the wind patterns.David wrote:Only 2 days this month have reached 25C here.
