Looks like the wet period for the NI is over with a distinctly anticyclonic look to the weather for the next week and beyond. Should be mainly sunny over the NI but the SI looks to be a frontal grave yard this week with considerable high cloud and rain in the southwest.

Yes looks like that with the anticyclone slowly introduced and moving NE, resulting in more milder weather over the South Island.

Looking in NZ Herald this morning the wettest main town this October looks to be Rotorua with 245mm and the driest, Dunedin on 22mm.

Looks to be some low level instability across NZ today, hence should get another day with the cu buildups and slight shower risk inland.

had afternoon showers about the ranges yesterday afternoon/evening was not expecting any to delelop but it did metservice forcasting possible thunderstorms for the northern and central NI on tuesday interesting could be a few day for the NI anyways for afternoon showers and thunderstroms this week before the nxt system rolls in

Yes NZstorm, some better than yesterday Cu on the ranges going up this morning. Could be a low risk of some thunder if the temp get's up to 20? But we'll see. Should be an isolated shower or two. Temp is around 17 in Templeton allready so it's only 3 degrees off and it's only just getting to midday so something could happen?

Yes Aaron, you should see a few glaciated cb's on the inland ranges this afternoon but nothing high topped enough for thunder. Atmosphere just too dry for bigger active cb's.

Yes some great CU alright out there even the odd turkey tower id say looking at them its to atleast 5000m already i do recll NZstorm saying 7000m thunder can develope

hmmm lets just wait and see but yes Aaron much higher build ups than yesterday for sure.
18C here max for today is 18C

mite be heading for 20C after all Aaron few smaller skits cloud showing up closer here to home not moving though sitting there getting bigger

Quite a bit of unexpected rain about Lower Hutt this morning with a weak southerly change. 16mm recorded in my gauge between about 9am and 2pm. It's back to sunny weather now (5pm), but it looks quite unstable over the Wairarapa.

Over all not a bad day

20C at 3pm had some nice CU along Foothills today and good precipitation developed out that way about 4-5pm dying down a little now though still some CU around towards maybe Hamner way.
Here's what i got out of today and of course a sattelite pic which shows build ups over south and north islands today.

Quite a bit of unexpected rain about Lower Hutt this morning with a weak southerly change. 16mm recorded in my gauge between about 9am and 2pm.

Quite an impressive amount there. TV1 reported 29mm at lower hutt.
This precip caused by a convergence zone between a southerly and light northerly.

All convective cloud over NZ today was relatively low topped, under the 4000m level.

I notice cb's really firing right up the east of Australia. The convective season has started really strongly over there. Amazing stuff for October.

-9.1

Nice photos there Jase and Steve.
I did keep an eye to the west especially from our property at West Melton but did not expect anything as it is too anticyclonic, barometer pressure too high. Tops were low too as well.
I would surprised if they produced a shower.
Next month should be more interesting as far as storms go up there in the foothills

Thunderstorm risk here today low in my opinion, though some Cu is developing upon the Kaimai Ranges, not to the south or south east towards Rotorua/Taupo just yet.

Becoming warm here the next few days, up to around 23c with comfort levels up to 26c, especially inland places like Taupo, Kawerau, Tokoroa etc

Yes Foggy, I agree. I don't expect any thunderstorms.
I see Met Service have a 'high risk' for our regions (Auckland and Waikato). But again, like yesterday, just not the moisture there.

Dewpoint here this morning is only 9C. I am thinking dewpoints will need to be around 13-14C for deep moist convection today.

Yes, dew point has dropped back a little more since morning so doesn't seem like enough moisture.. but does anyone know what has happened to the NZWP soundings??

The NZWP sounding for midday today is available now Ricky.

Newstalk ZB were still giving out the Auckland forecast of scattered thunderstorms/heavy falls/hail at 5pm.
