Hope tonight is a fizzer for Auckland and other affected regions. Especially with what is potentially looming on Tues/Weds.

Surprised I haven't heard/seen much out of Coromandel (minus SH25a washing out). Looks like they've had a lot of rain and considering what we've seen out of all the surrounding areas the last couple of days..

Almost 60mm today, and now over 300mm for the event for me in SE Auckland. Am very lucky to not be in an area that floods.

Thanks for the posts and information. I think those of us who haven't been affected by this event are stunned at how Auckland was hammered on Friday. Thanks to the emergency services, support groups and volunteers who stepped in to try and help people through. Good community response too. The full impact will become known over the next few days as Aucklanders start to get their heads around what has happened.

Coromandel and Bay of Plenty got a lashing from this event Saturday and overnight too. The impact of that needs to come out yet.

I think we all need to learn a few lessons from this event as we continue through stormy times.

Very humid and thundery in the lower NI this afternoon. Driving back from Taranaki, we took a detour near Bulls to follow this vigorous little cell out towards the coast. Some very nice "clear air" CGs were the reward. The kid was impressed.

Yeah, that thunder and heavy rain was insane out here. 44mm here in the last 3 hours, and still going...

The warning system used by Metservice on Friday for Auckland was completely inadequate for that type of event.
I recall while living in Sydney in the 1990s severe thunderstorm warnings would be broadcast over main stream radio stations so as many people as possible would get the severe weather message.

Got the warned thunderstorm right over head now. Sustained 30mm/hr rain for last 15-20 min.

192mm here since Thursday so far (mtd 269mm).

Nice MS 12 hr Akld radar rainfall accumulation to 6am this morning.

"North Auckland saw the worst of it (Wellsford, Warkworth area 70-100mm+), with Waiheke, Hunua, Mangatangi and Waitakeres also seeing downpours, peak rain rates 20-40mm/hr ^GG"

The modelled 500mb temperatures here for late tomorrow showing upper level cooling which has been one of the features of this January.
The cool upper level temperatures creating the instability with the moisture feed.

Comparing this January with January 2022, Auckland Motat last year recording just 3mm, Mangere 4mm and the airport 9mm for the month. Last January was La Nina as well.

Most of the houses around here escaped flooding on Friday night but some of those that did get flooded got hit hard. One house 200m from here got flooded to near ceiling level, others got flooded to window sill level. There are no streams or creeks in our area.On Friday night the local primary School grounds filled with water, the water then overflowed into local streets, small rivers formed .Properties below street level got flooded.

Allot of water management is going on currently.

Karipiro Lake is being drained atm, with the Taupo control gates fully open to release as much water as possible with the Waikato and Taupo catchments set to get much more rainfall.
It will take 18 hours for the water at the Taupo gates to get to Karapiro, so draining is needed to get ahead of the rain.

Some residents in Hamilton along the Waikato River have minor flooding (in backyards and gardens ) to the river running very high with the water release
