Re: General February Weather
After a surprisingly cool night (down to 13 degrees C), the temperature is climbing quickly now up to 18 C. I can already hear the cicadas. I’m taking the kids to the dinosaur exploration in Ashburton today. Locals will know what I’m about to subject myself to in this heat… at least it’s not raining!!

Re: General February Weather
Going to get incredibly hot here today if the northeast breeze doesn't get up before 2pm. I would say 35 on the cards for the city if it takes till 2pm for the breeze to kick in, otherwise 32 or 33 if it kicks in by midday.
Currently sitting on 26 degrees at 9am, with Jeffs in HoonHay sitting on 28 degrees. I see his weather website is shutting down this weekend, which I know I will personally miss after many years of observation.

Warming up quickly here also - 25deg atm. Was a light NW but now a light NE, also a stationery building line of cloud running from the west - NE, that's promising for a shower later.

Jeff’s now at 31.9c at 10am. I’ve just been for a mtb ride up rapaki and down the adventure park. Tried to avoid the heat of the day but it’s absolutely scorching across the port hills.Cantab03 wrote: Sat 04/02/2023 09:04 Going to get incredibly hot here today if the northeast breeze doesn't get up before 2pm. Personally it’s a massive loss. Been following Jeff’s station for close to 10 years. Wonderful resource and history.

Sitting on 34 degrees at 10:30am at Jeffs now. 29 at the airport, but that tends to catch up pretty quickly on these days with light winds.

31.6 there now, 0.7 to go if 2018's 32.3 is still the record.mattyj46 wrote:Metservice forecasting 32 for Invercargill tomorrow, potentially to flirt with the all time high

Re: General February Weather
Interesting to note it's still 28C even with a moderate NE in the city, so just goes to show how warm it currently is as it would normally scale back to about 25C or lower.
35C out in Akaroa today, sea breeze kicked in over the tops about the same time as the city.
Tomorrow's front should bring alot of rain in a short space of time to the west coast and the alps, as it's feeding off the tropical belt of air to the north.
Hopefully people won't go the rivers for a swim when its up in flood, won't be as hot tomorrow but still around 29C.
Spillover looks mid afternoon rather than morning.

Re: General February Weather
I’m feeling very thankful for my air conditioning this morning. It hasn’t gone below 25 c here all night. I’m hearing the odd gust of wind outside as well.

Radar is very active over the South Island at the moment. Only a brief shower here a couple of hours ago. Ashburton appears to be on the edge of the heavy spillover rain.

Re: General February Weather
Dunedin Aero ended its 6 day 'heatwave' yesterday, with Tmaxs ranging between 27.3C and 32.9C (normal is about 21C).
Christchurch, Timaru and maybe Dunedin City could also end up with a 5 day 'heatwave' if tomorrow's forecast Tmaxs hold true.

Re: General February Weather
And up here we are struggling to get above 25C in the day time. Humidity has been pretty bad though, every day this month has seen dewpoints around 20 or higher

Re: General February Weather
Managed a whole 2mm in spillover rain this afternoon. Last 4 days now read for CHCH:
Thursday 33.2
Friday 33.8
Saturday 33.9
Sunday (today) 29.1
Tomorrow and Tuesday both have expected highs of 29, so no surprise if they both hit 30 degrees too!
Currently 28 degrees at 8pm with 50% humidity.

Re: General February Weather
I didn't post up yesterday's weather from here but it was a rather warm and humid day with blue dome skies and not much wind and a maximum of 30.5C and quite a warm night last night eventuated with it only dropping to 20.2C.
Today, high cloud this morning moving east and thickening out there and becoming fine in the afternoon and evening. More windy today with a N to NW wind blowing for much of the day and into the evening. 28.8c the maximum for today and much drier humility wise.
Looks like there were a few isolated thunderstorms down south and along the Southern Alps south of here this afternoon and evening.
Saw a couple of distant flashes from here later this evening.

Spent the night up Mt Egmont. In a campervan. Stormy and torrential rain all night, cleared to a beautiful day, with the Mt revealing itself after being shrouded in cloud all

Re: General February Weather
Kaikoura, Christchurch Aero, Ashburton Aero, Timaru Aero and Oamaru have all just recorded their 5th consecutive day of temps 5.0C above their 1991-2020 normal Tmaxs, which technically constitutes a widespread South Island east coast 'heatwave'.

Re: General February Weather
Yes the heat continues in CHCH.
Last 5 days now with 32, 34, 34, 29 and now 31 (may climb further). Looking very brown around the city, quite a bit greener in parts of North Canterbury from storms that have been caught there and missed here in the last few weeks.
