Re: General June Weather
Have heard some distant rumbly sounds around on and off in the last hour. Mainly E/SE/S of here I think.

Re: General June Weather
I was going to start a new topic but I thought I would put it in this GJW section as pertains to the weather this month with the East Cape/Gisborne regions under a red weather warning because of a stubborn intense anticyclone just sitting there to the SE of NZ.
Blocking Highs.
The blocking high out to the SE of the country has been around for about 7 days now with it weakening slightly but not moving much. Quite intense it was peaking at about 1039 hPas.
For a stationary anticyclone what is the record for an anticyclone to remain in place before moving on and dissipating?

Re: General June Weather
I have a vague recollection that many years ago I noticed one which stayed put for 15 days, but not sure. The thing is, often times the HP cell will weaken and intensify over the same spot - so its not technically the same anticyclone, but its a persistent HP anomaly. The Chathams area is one of the most favoured spots for mid latitude blocking on the entire globe. Its a key feature of the loading pattern for the AAO or SAM.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: ↑Fri 23/06/2023 17:47 I was going to start a new topic but I thought I would put it in this GJW section as pertains to the weather this month with the East Cape/Gisborne regions under a red weather warning because of a stubborn intense anticyclone just sitting there to the SE of NZ.

Re: General June Weather
Another generally dull and overcast day, although it did look brighter early this afternoon with a sort of NW Arch to the west.
However low cloud and drizzle moving in this afternoon with some light rain this evening.
12.4C for today with 3.2mm of light rain.

Re: General June Weather
Central Otago has been hit hard this June by stubborn low cloud, Wanaka with no sun for the last week and average maximum around 4-5C this last week.
A very active year for the blocking highs east of the South Island.
Thunderstorm risk returns here Monday with upper air turning colder

Re: General June Weather
Arrowtown has been having fog overnight but clear skies during the day for the past 4 days - magnificent weather, lows 0f -2 to -4 and some cracking frosts, including almost a hoar frost this morning.
What are the models looking like for the next 7-10 days though, big snow event likely?

Hopefully the next cold southerly or SW event will be after we go whale watching off the coast of Kaikoura on Tuesday.
Hopefully, the next anticyclone will build in the Tasman sea instead of off the east of the South Island, so that low pressures systems go to the SE instead of riding over blocking highs to the SE, to give a reprieve to those in the Gisborne and Hawkes Bay area, after those ex TC lows that have moved over the area. Mind you it is winter and the chances of things drying out are not as good as if in summer.

Re: General June Weather
This recent tweet from MetService states that Gisborne has had its wettest June on record - and the records go back over 100 years to 1910. And there is still nearly a week to go.
Is there any reason why this part of NZ has been so wet this month?

I believe it’s due to the blocking highs to the East of the South Island.Simon Culling wrote: ↑Sun 25/06/2023 02:20 This recent tweet from MetService states that Gisborne has had its wettest June on record - and the records go back over 100 years to 1910. And there is still nearly a week to go.

Arrowtown and Queenstown are much less prone to the lingering low cloud.GSVNoFixedAbode wrote: ↑Sat 24/06/2023 16:39 Arrowtown has been having fog overnight but clear skies during the day for the past 4 days - magnificent weather, lows 0f -2 to -4 and some cracking frosts, including almost a hoar frost this morning.

There is cold air in the models for later in the week.
See how this looks in a couple days. Flow might be more west/southwest which is still good for Qtwn region getting some snow atleast to low levels on the mnts.

Re: General June Weather
Yep that's my non-expert take too. Still been stuck in a La Nina pattern as discussed earlier in the thread. A change coming this week though.darcyplumb wrote: ↑Sun 25/06/2023 07:41I believe it’s due to the blocking highs to the East of the South Island.Simon Culling wrote: ↑Sun 25/06/2023 02:20 This recent tweet from MetService states that Gisborne has had its wettest June on record - and the records go back over 100 years to 1910. Re: General June Weather
Over the years. traditionally in New Zealand you think of the West coast of the South Island to be wet with it always raining but with climate change, it seems like the East Coast/ Gisborne area, is becoming to be the wettest area of the country, especially at the moment

Re: General June Weather
Cold air aloft keeps the heavy shower risk going here today and tomorrow, a slight chance for thunder mainly near the west coast.
