The latest models overnight have certainly got much colder for Wednesday into early Thursday. This is over mid Canterbury northwards, with an increase in moisture totals too.
Snow will definitely be falling to around 200-300m but whether it gets lower is still questionable.

Next week looks concerning in terms of more heavy rain under already sodden soils and high water tables.

MetService issued warning now for 20-30cm for inland mid/north Canterbury. Winter seemed to start slow this year but she sure has picked up lately, even up in Auckland it’s felt properly cold and crisp at times.

The models have had such a wretched time this winter predicting snow levels etc so I'm not going to believe anything until I see it with my own eyes haha

And whilst I agree, I would suggest eyes wide open early on Thursday morning, in either unfulfilled anticipation or amazement.

Bugger, looking likely that snow will fell here so I'm going to have to take down a shade cloth covering 1,000 Sequoia trees, was hoping I would get away with it this winter.
Its been many years since we had a dump of snow here.

Latest heavy snow warnings from Metservice now has snow for northern Canterbury above 200m which has increased from 100m in this afternoons heavy snow warning so the forecast temperature must have increased ever so slightly…

Models not much interested in anything below 300m tomorrow afternoon and evening, but anything above beach level is fair game for Thursday morning...

Let’s hope that forecast holds, it seems every time we look to have even a slight chance of snow to low levels this winter the models always back off 24-48 hours beforehand…

After a frosty start, a fine day eventuated with scattered high cloud from the west moving across at times.
Light but cold westerlies today but becoming calm this evening.
Today's maximum was 10.5C.
Interesting to see how snowy it will get tomorrow. :-k

Actually thought this system unlike others has shown increases later on closer to the date. Upper temperatures continue to cool along with moisture totals.
It's snow joke

Metservice have downgraded the warning to a watch for North Canterbury. Looks like a band moving north this evening and lingering in North Canterbury in the morning before clearing.

Latest guidance suggests a dusting perhaps to sea level coastal plains.

A slight decrease in moisture totals but a shot of colder air actually arrives between midnight and 5am now.
The colder air lingering will allow this to carry on until mid morning, before the freezing levels lift.
This is from Rakaia northwards.

I wonder if there might be a few beefy showers move up tonight with hail too.

The sky has a very wintry look to it here all of a sudden. I’m not expecting any snow here but the clouds certainly have that ‘look.’ Perhaps some flurries inland of Ashburton later on.

That's asking for trouble! Hope you snow lovers get some snow down there (apart from you, of course, Richard).

Regarding snow showers, doesn't look likely walking home from the Pub Quiz, some stars shining up there and 4C.
Anyway after a frosty start, a cold day of high cloud and light southerly winds.
Some light rain this afternoon and evening. 1.6mm fo today. 11.7C the maximum for today.

Dunedin had a dusting of snow over the hill suburbs, I think that is the 3rd fall of the Winter there for the suburbs.
