Was it last year or the year before that a storm parked itself up there and dropped 120mm in two hours?Razor wrote: Thu 28/09/2023 18:51 MS just issued a severe warned TS, Mt Peel area. John should be seeing some action

Re: General September Weather
Southerly through at 1650hrs, with strong and squally winds. No thunder but steady rain.
I don't know why a STW from MS was issued as most of the electrical activity seemed to of died away when the southerly moved over.
The STW should of been issued when that line of hail looked quite suspicious, south of Timaru.
No hail here thank goodness.

Wow the gust front has just hit here and the wind is very strong. Rain curtains being whipped up off the road. Street lights are surging on and off.

Little rattly bits hitting the window briefly. Temp. down to 9.6°C so far and rain sounds heavy.

Unusual to see such an intense band of rain at the back of a change like this. It’s been training over the same area for at least an hour now.

Re: General September Weather
I'm wondering whether that might be a snow echo Darcy. Can get convective set ups like that especially this time of year. Snow levels might be at 4 or 500m but heavy at that level being convective.darcyplumb wrote: Thu 28/09/2023 20:28 Unusual to see such an intense band of rain at the back of a change like this. Snowing on burkes pass earlier. This will be easing by midnight and heading north

Thanks for your input. Interesting about the snow echo. I hadn’t thought of that. It looked quite steady on Burkes Pass earlier, also snow falling in Fairlie.mikestormchaser wrote: Thu 28/09/2023 20:38I'm wondering whether that might be a snow echo Darcy. Re: General September Weather
Not surprised to hear about the lower snow across the Waitaha region. That convection as Mike has mentioned bringing the snow levels down.
Plenty of heavy rain here before and some brief small hail, another pleasant top up of rainfall.
Onto the next wave of fronts
Also looking quite warm from mid week next week, as that air comes across from a sizzling Australia currently.

Not uncommon - I recall (and have read about on Paperspast) plenty of occurrences where snow has fallen down onto the plains, often much lower than forecast under similar situations.Storm Struck wrote: Thu 28/09/2023 21:34 Not surprised to hear about the lower snow across the Waitaha region. Some briefly heavy downpours of rain in St Albans this evening, though easing now.

Re: General September Weather
Grey and overcast this morning with low cloud but clearing away to become a fine and sunny day although it was a tad hazy with some cloud forms around. Light NE developing this afternoon with it getting up to 15.5C.
From about 3pm, cloud developing to the west and increasing more so from about 4pm with thunder heard to the south just before 5pm.
A few distant rumbles were heard but that was it. Los of sferics on the AM band.
Strong southerly came through just before 5pm with it coming onto rain with 12.3mm falling until the rain and wind eased by 8:45pm.
Wind around to the north later this evening after the southerly died out.
No thunder was heard north of here, sadly, despite MS STW, although it could of been further north than "Thunderstorm Corner." as usually you can here thunder from the TC region, here.

Re: General September Weather
The trough crossing NZ tomorrow looks very cold. For the North Island there is a moist morning front followed by very cold upper level troughing, some thunder on the cards. Looks particularly cold with the strong winds tomorrow.

Re: General September Weather
Another risk of heavy showers and hail for coastal Canterbury this evening/ tonight. I'd have more of a risk of thunderstorms aswel.
North Islands turn again tomorrow as spwill mentioned with strong upper cold trough. Then Monday again another potential for South island before a settled and warmer period later next week. The mountains look like they have more snow on them this morning than they have all winter.

Very coastal set up tonight John, one would suspect birding flat/ ashburton river mouth could be the best spot later. Will see what happens. I think metservice outlook has the risks spot on.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: Fri 29/09/2023 15:50Chances looking very remote hee nowmikestormchaser wrote: Fri 29/09/2023 08:17 Another risk of heavy showers and hail for coastal Canterbury this evening/ tonight. I'm expecting that too. Might see a flash out to sea
Winds died down now and calm. Awaiting the SW to come through and see what will eventuate from then ?
