Re: General December Weather
Yes, there were nice clouds like that here before the southerly came through around noon but nothing to show any resistance from the oncoming cold front moving through hence all the clagg and light rain/drizzle we got as a result of it, especially more so late afternoon and evening.
25.5C it got to before the southerly and clagg came through.
A photo of a result of the southerly change coming through that didn't result in any thunderstorm activity whatsoever, which in some ways is good as we dont want hail to be upto 20mm falling this time of year. Thunderstorms with drizzle is more acceptable

Lovely looking clagg there, John. Looks like a typical Devon winter sky with mist + drizzle.

Boring day here, just some patchy light showers/drizzle. Dewpoint up to 19 earlier.

Yes, the clagg or stratus moving in after a southerly wind change.Simon Culling wrote: Mon 04/12/2023 07:30 Lovely looking clagg there, John. Looks like a typical Devon winter sky with mist + drizzle.![]()
It seems to come quite often here in South Canterbury when MS issue a thunderstorm warning on a cold southerly change coming through. Looks good for a start off but when the southerly does come through lower status moves in from off the sea and cancels any further development, which is good in someway, but who wants hail upto 20mm falling as forecasted. It did happen in Timaru in 2018 when lots of cars were damaged.
Twice now we have had a thunderstorm which was not mentioned on MS Thunderstorm Outlook page, the first one was not long after we had moved to
Geraldine. This thunderstorm had lots of cloud to ground strikes which one hit a transformer here and cut off power to the town.

Re: General December Weather
Light rain or drizzle overnight and this morning with low cloud which lasted all day resulting in a cold day with today's maximum being only 13.1C.
Had the fire going tonight. Not bad with 3 nights out of the 4 days so far this summer, we have had to light the fire.
I can see days this summer where we can get day's of 34C then the next day it will be 14C or lower, when the southerly with clagg moving across.

Re: General December Weather
Another day of cloudy overcast skies here but more milder. 16.7C the maximum for today. I saw a glimpse of a blue patch this afternoon. WoW
RNZ going on about severe thunderstorms and downpours around Auckland and Northland today but nothing mentioned on the forum.
I noticed there was a bit of rain up Auckland/Northland way.

Plenty of bright sunny weather coming up for those parts of NZ that have been in the clag last few days.
There were some thunderstorms over Northland yesterday afternoon however the overcaste cloud cover of the past couple of days dampened down thunderstorm potential.

We're at that annual stage in Auckland where summer's valiantly trying to start. Kinda reminds me of the scene in Harry Potter where the kids are learning to ride their broomsticks for the first time. UP!

Sky looked kinda interesting around 5pm, very well defined wisps of cirrus mixed with cumulus. Also, the Pohutukawa are all flowering

Horrah!
Back to a more summery day with the clagg clearing away overnight and becoming warm today with today's maximum being 24.8C with light winds from the northerly direction.

Re: General December Weather
More of what I was thinking December would be like from into next week, lots of SW changes with cooler upper air and troughs.
Hopefully this is what we will see until into the new year, because it increases the thunderstorm chance days.
Tuesday, Wednesday next week have potential at this stage, maybe a slight risk on Sunday too with a trough brushing the eastern South Island.
Mild this morning on 19C currently and a light southerly, chance of a shower later on but not expecting too much.

Re: General December Weather
Spoke a bit soon, nice TCU convergence has gone up this morning.
I don't think much will come of it in terms for thunder, but maybe a few isolated steady showers.

Re: General December Weather
Inland timaru region low risk of thunder their today for South island is my pick.
Still working in coalgate/ glentunnel and nice clouds about
Feels more like we are in neutral phase than elnino or LA nina. And I only define that on the variable wind flows of late and atmospheric conditions. Hopefully next week gives the south island some thunder chances. Certainly some signs in models for that

The sky is looking very unstable to the north and south of Ashburton. Big big towers.

Just come back in from "Up on the Downs'
Lower cloud moving in sadly hindering observance but I did hear one or two sfrics on the truck radio.
Easterly still quite breezy here although cloud cover has made it a bit cooler.
