Warm for a start off this morning but sadly the dry southerly moved across about 11am, fresh at times and cooling own from then on
Clagg rolling in now, sadly.

Re: General January Weather
The surface SW certainly has come through much earlier than what the models were showing, although I'm presuming it may swing back to the westerly quarter with that front still moving up the west coast.
Was 30C now 26C with a moderate SW.
Thinking tomorrow presents a low risk just with the time of year, and cool upper air. Even though the coldest air passes to the south of NZ.
Wind will be SE but showers could be heavy for a time early afternoon.

The fresh and breezy dry southerly change fizzled out this afternoon and it is back to northeries here with fine but cloudy skies and what clagg there was, all gone. Back to mid twenties.Storm Struck wrote: Sun 14/01/2024 16:09 The surface SW certainly has come through much earlier than what the models were showing, although I'm presuming it may swing back to the westerly quarter with that front still moving up the west coast.

The MJO is swinging quite rapidly around the clock, and could be just in phase 6 in 10 days time. That pattern is a phase 6/7 look, so perhaps its a few days ahead of itself, but the idea is plausible.harleyb wrote: Sun 14/01/2024 20:26 Quite likely a rogue model run and a long way off but look what GFS has just spat out ...![]()

Re: General January Weather
Warm start for the day with light winds this morning, but before noon, a dry southerly popped up with fresh winds which cooled the temperature down from today's maximum of 28.1C prior to the change. Winds died out mid afternoon with a revert back to northerlies with a rise in temperature but with some high cloud that delivered about 16 spots of overthrow rain around 3pm. Northerlies died out around 6:30 pm with a revert back to the southerlies with the associated clagg rolling in and remaining throughout the evening.

Re: General January Weather
Very much a bitsy sort of day with steady showers converging over from west to east.
Wind is currently a light Westerly, but I see the showers further south near Ashburton are moving up the plains so must be another southerly wind shift coming.
2mm so far and much needed

Re: General January Weather
Just had quite a heavy shower here, lots of surface water pooled up very quickly with it being dry.
Easily another 5mm

It was on TVOne news last night but I missed it.
It's been a windy day here with breezy easteries. Some weak cloud build ups.

Low cloud overnight and this morning with some rain around 8:30am this morning, then clearing to a partly cloudy day with easterly winds fresh at times. Clouding up later this afternoon with more light showers then remaining overcast and grey into the evening with some occasional drizzle.
Today's maximum was 18.9C with 7.9mm of rain.

Re: General January Weather
Please keep this nonsense out of the general weather threads!
Back on topic, looks like a very warm and muggy week ahead - temps consistently 26-28 in the daytime and 20 at night.

An intense looking rain system showing in the models for early next week, possible severe weather for some parts of NZ, see how this looks on future model runs
