I see the MS forecast for Ashburton tomorrow says ‘uncomfortably muggy overnight.’ How fun!

Very warm this morning for this time, 29C and not even 10am yet.
Cloud should be more patchy today though which will keep it around the early 30,s I'm picking.
Tomorrow could see some areas around 35C possibly, less high cloud cover as the heavy rain feeding in to the west coast starts to gradually ease.
The front lining up for Tuesday is timing well, with the potential for thunderstorms and hail in the afternoon followed by some heavy welcome rain at night.

Not often it's 29 degrees at 10am with a 35kmh Northeeasterly. Enough sun today and a slight tilt to northerly wind and 33 on the cards. I agree, I think the city with enough sun tomorrow will challenge 35.

28.4 here with the NW wind gusting to 70kmh. I’ll take the wind over the humidity (wind is helping to keep it down for sure). MS still forecasting very muggy conditions overnight tonight.

Looks very wet, West of the divide in the South Island. Hope the rivers can cope with the excess rainfall.

Have seen videos from the coast of some rivers high up and rough already.
Switching between 32 to 33C here at the moment, and the NW has just started to get much stronger.
I'm sure FENZ is on high alert the next few days.
Might only drop to about 23C tonight too.

33c in Chch city at the moment. Very happy to have an indoors job and AC on full at the moment. Tomorrow could be one to watch with not much respite from this heat overnight.

34C at Christchurch Airport before, making it the warmest official temperature for this site this summer season so far.
Although the wind gusts are only around 50-55kmh, because it's so warm some branches are breaking easy.
Mostly due to hot sap especially on gum trees.
Can even smell that ferment from the pinus radiata trees.

Temperature still hovering between 32 and 34 as the sun goes in and out. A distinct smell of smoke in the air last 30 mins or so. Port hills looking scary brown. We will need this rain on Tuesday to eventuate. Should be about 28 degrees at 7pm tonight for first ball of the Blackcaps T20 at Hagley.

There is a developing fire at Amberley, that will be the smoke you smell. (I can smell it in Wigram too)

Two big fires - one at Loburn and one at Amberley. Both 4th alarm I believe and multiple homes evacuated.

State of Emergency declared on the West Coast
Heavy rainfall, rising rivers, and dangerous driving conditions has prompted Civil Defence to declare a local State of Emergency for the Westland district from Hokitika to Haast.

State Highway 6 between Hokitika and Haast was to be cleared of all traffic from 6pm today.

Travellers currently on the road must immediately move to the nearest township and seek accommodation.

If people were unable to find accommodation they should make their way to the local Civil Defence Centre for advice.

Police were now on the road actively directing travellers to safety.

West Coast Emergency Management Group controller Te Aroha Cook said the safety of people in the region had to be top of mind, and the best way to keep everyone safe during this period was to keep them off the roads.
