Re: General January Weather
In comparison with the last few days it was slightly more comfortable today, although still warm for a south westerly on 25C.
Some mid level instability this evening too, and also drove through a steady shower around Motukarara.
Should be some patchy welcome rain tomorrow but also very humid I bet with temperatures in the late 20,s.
Tuesday afternoon still looking ok for thunderstorms from early afternoon.

Maybe an isolated storm for Waikato today, more active south of there like yesterday.

Re: General January Weather
We got quite a few good CGs out of this cell yesterday afternoon as it came out to the coast at Tongaporutu. Today has much the same feel about it, so we might get a repeat show later on. Right now it's already too warm and humid to be outside & there's not a breath of wind. Feels almost tropical.spwill wrote: Mon 22/01/2024 07:29 Maybe an isolated storm for Waikato today, more active south of there like yesterday.

Re: General January Weather
Up to 28.5 here a moment ago during a sunny spell, reckon 30 is easily achievable this afternoon if the cloud cover can reduce a bit more

Re: General January Weather
Must reach 30 on my station today, surprisingly have not so far this summer. I did clear and repaint the screen in October and a flowering climber has blocked off direct line of sight to neighbour's roof which I suspect was radiating heat at times, the new neighbours have not cut it back like the previous ones did every spring.

The official sites must see some change over time with trees growing and new buildings going up etc in a bigger version of what I might be seeing.

Re: General January Weather
Today certainly is very muggy with the rain this morning, and still the odd spotty shower now but 26C.
We might see some isolated heavy showers return from late afternoon.
MS seem to have a focus on the risk of storms for Canterbury for tomorrow morning rather than afternoon. The SW does arrive around 8am but most of the surface moisture isn't there until lunchtime onwards.
Isolated thunderstorms should form but it might not be until 12 to 1pm.
Also picking hail to be in the 10-20mm range, just with such an abrupt shift in upper temperatures and lingering humid air.
Snow down to 1500m even Tuesday night.

Re: General January Weather
Has reached 31.0 on my station despite some cloud cover. Warmest day since 2022. Hamilton aero was up to 29.8 now. New Plymouth 28.8 with a Westerly wind is notable.

We will be holding out for some rain next couple of days as everything is parched around here!

Maxed at 29.1 here at 1.30pm then became really cloudy. Dewpoint was up around 23 at the time and less wind than yesterday so certainly felt hot outsidecbm wrote: Mon 22/01/2024 15:40 Has reached 31.0 on my station despite some cloud cover. Re: General January Weather
Cloudy with some rain overnight but easing before dawn with a NW Arch and sky this morning.
Becoming a warm day with light winds and some stormy looking cloud forms along the foothills this afternoon, probably resulting in that thunderstorm near Waimate. 30C the maximum for today.

Re: General January Weather
I hot humid day for Canterbury plains temperatures around the 29 degree mark. Some mid level instability around this afternoon and reports of thunderstorms in south Canterbury.
Tomorrow If there's still enough surface moisture around with the southerly change may trigger a thunderstorm on the wind change but I'd warrant it a low risk.
Here is a collage from a friend of mine of the thunderstorm that hit at 4 34am on Monday. Right over the rolleston township

We didn't get another thunderstorm yesterday in the end but instead saw this very cool example of iridescence.

Hopefully an interesting day coming up being smack in the middle of a moderate risk area, sun now coming out and winds are light.

Re: General January Weather
Sunny and windy from the NW here so far, the wind change to the south and east not making any progress inland.
