Re: General January Weather
Another one of these systems that peels rain from west to east with a surface southerly, yet over Otago the showers are moving up from the SW.
Only a few mils here today so far from drizzly to light rain, but surface maps point to a good splash overnight hopefully.

Rain splashing down here alright, putting me off checking the mailbox.
Temp. has fallen to 11.6°C so far...
and I have the heat pump heating.
What a contrast to yesterday!

Re: General January Weather
Some of the clouds steaming past to the west had quite a yellowish cast to them.
10.6°C now.
Still raining, and no mail in the letter-box

The NW wind has replaced by a SE around the middle of the afternoon, bought in the odd cloud and cooler temps. Not sure if we will be any relief from this ongoing dry spell today, only had 10.2 mm for the month so far

Re: General January Weather
30C is a temperature often approached but only ocassionly exceeded in the upper NI for proper screened measurements. Everything has to align just right on the day, on top of a favourable synoptic setup.David wrote:Maxed at 29.1 here at 1.30pm then became really cloudy. Dewpoint was up around 23 at the time and less wind than yesterday so certainly felt hot outsidecbm wrote: Mon 22/01/2024 15:40 Has reached 31.0 on my station despite some cloud cover. Warmest day since 2022. Hamilton aero was up to 29.8 now. New Plymouth 28.8 with a Westerly wind is notable.

Re: General January Weather
Certainly much cooler this morning on 8C and some light dustings of snow to the west, no doubt will melt by this evening.
A good 12mm overnight which will help going forward, but we still need much more.
There is a small trough brushing the South Island today, is a weak one but is why you will see those TCU cloud build ups now.
Chance of a shower possibly heavy but very isolated.
The weekend has more rain both days and thunderstorm possibility on Sunday with a cool upper trough crossing the South Island.

Re: General January Weather
It was a fine day today after the cold wet day yesterday. 20C the maxximum with moderate NE winds.
There was snow on the top of Mt. Peel also one of the 4 Peaks, possibly not the Firey one.
Interesting cloud forms to the west on sunset driving home from Barkers.

Doesn't surprise me, given the look of the clouds I mentioned in post #155 on Tuesday evening.NZ Thunderstorm Soc wrote: Wed 24/01/2024 23:47 ...

Re: General January Weather
The rain feature moving onto the NI Sunday may be thundery, certainly heavy showers with it. Upper level cool air and convergence over the SI Sunday brings an afternoon thunderstorm risk in the east south of Rakaia

Very warm night. In fact temps got warmer as the night went on. Didn’t go below 20 here and currently 24.5 degrees.

Re: General January Weather
A very warm morning here already as at 8:30am temperature steadily rising and 27C, far too warm for the morning run.
Should peak at around 30 or 31C at the highest today.
Wind was quite strong around 5am this morning too, but is now a moderate NW.
As Spwill mentioned isolated thunderstorm risk south of Rakaia tomorrow afternoon/evening.
The end of the week looks particularly interesting with a few potential thunder set up days, will keep a close eye.
This time of year is usually dominated by high pressure and calmer days, I can't recall the last time we had a full week of blue dome light wind days.

Re: General January Weather
One year since the great flood here, some houses in Mt Eden still have yellow stickers on the window and remain unoccupied.
We were completely untouched here but only a short distance away houses were flooded to the windows.
Currently 20C here at midday which is cool for Auckland in January.

Re: General January Weather
There is actually a risk there today for even as far north as Rangiora, probably no more than a low risk as MS have indicated though.
More likely south of Rakaia for thunderstorms, but also good local wind convergences at the surface should see some isolated heavy showers even for the city later on.

Re: General January Weather
Hoping for some decent rain this evening but it looks very patchy on radar. 24mm month to date so getting a bit dry.
