Re: Re: General February Weather
Looking at long range modelling it looks quite possible we won't get any rain here for the rest of month. We are only on 4mm MTD and the last rain was 12 days ago.

Mod Note:
With Wednesday's massive 'Port Hills fire' largely contained for now, I thought it might be an idea to move that thread from the 'NZ Weather' section to the 'Off Topic' section for further updates, etc...

Re: General February Weather
This will be fascinating to watch how this El Niño will pan out throughout February and the coming Autumn, the sea surface temp anomoly has never been this high in February since records have started - you would have to imagine this will mean more energy in the atmosphere and a more stormy next few months?

Re: General February Weather
Over the last month or so Ive seen quite a number of YouTube videos from different channels claiming that the planet was in for major severe weather events during 2024. Where TF do they get that from considering NOAA have been indicating for at least 3 months that we are heading back into La Nina by our southern winter time.

Re: General February Weather
Back home from the Art Deco festival WE in Napier.
Fine and warm weather for the festival which was good for the Hawke's Bay region that was devastated from the cyclones last year at the same time.
Warm here too with today's maximum being 30.7C. Overcast and claggy when we got home this evening with some drizzle.

This tweet from MetService posted yesterday (19th Feb) shows a temperature drop of 8°C in 2 minutes at Timaru Airport during Monday afternoon. Was this due to a southerly change or a sea breeze?

Southerly change: I went from running air-con to heating that afternoon after it changed here!Simon Culling wrote: ↑Wed 21/02/2024 11:11 This tweet from MetService posted yesterday (19th Feb) shows a temperature drop of 8°C in 2 minutes at Timaru Airport during Monday afternoon. Definitely the southerly change, Simon. It was a fine and very warm day before the southerly and clagg moved over later in the day.Simon Culling wrote: ↑Wed 21/02/2024 11:11 This tweet from MetService posted yesterday (19th Feb) shows a temperature drop of 8°C in 2 minutes at Timaru Airport during Monday afternoon. We flew from Napier where it was was a warm 30C, where they said it was a warm day in Timaru but the southerly and low cloud had rolled in and there would be overcast with a temperature drop when we arrive at Timaru' airport.

Re: General February Weather
Some thunderstorm risk here Sunday with what should be the first decent rain here in a few weeks. Frontal activity moves in from the west Sunday with warm humid conditions to activate the front.
Watch for a few Cbs east of here later today with cool upper levels, heating and convergence to our east.
