Nice pictures there Aaron
Similar to what I saw at and coming back from West Melton.
I had my video camera with me but did no filming.
I must get a digital camera
Hope the Sea-breeze/coastal influence is a bit better tomorrow?
Looking good out there lots of scatterd cumulus and towering CU also getting very black to the west. Thunderstorms looking alot more likly today.
Trying to watch rugby and weather at same time .
Cheers
JASON.
Yes Jason heading out that way this afternoon
It's been southerly here all morning, so I don't know what they mean by a southerly 'change' around midday?
Maybe the change is a more aggresiver southerly or perhaps even a NE change??? That'ill be good
Its just turned NE now John so this will be good up against the southerly when it comes the clouds are building to a certain level but there's just a little ingrediant they are lacking and thats a kicking southerly.
Cheers
JASON.
very unstable air over the south Island. Hopefully the surface conditions can come togeather to allow some convection to fire. Ideally you want that colder southerly change to hold off as much as possible to allow some surface heating the development of a NE.
That unstable air will be over the NI tomorrow.
Had what looked to be a weak front go through here about an hour ago with a 5mins of quite heavy rain from low topped cbs.

I'd say the biggest I saw fall here in Omarama was only around 10mm maximum, and most was half that size.
Thanks Gary.
Southerly has just gone through Timaru (at 11am and only 9kts) and pressure is rising. There is a convergence line of east to west oriented showers on the radar not really moving much at the moment just south of them. Expect to see it surge northward I would think.

It looks like the slow moving convergence line on the radar isn't a big player. The radar shows somes storms developing inland with the biggest one over the Rangitata River inland. Have detected hail and have a lightning strike on this one. There is another cell northwest of Christchurch.
So it looks like they are going to fire quite nicely inland with the sotuhsoutheast onshore flow this afternoon.
Been NE all day here, clouds built up during the morning and rain for the last 30 mins or so, but none of the clouds look particularly big or threatening. Winds still NE, temp 14.
Yes some moisture indications out there alright especailly to my NW.
I hope the southerly gets kicking in soon .
Here's my pics from yesterday i thought id post these now and post todays later on.
Cheers

Anybody else have problems with forum pics not loading? I thought it was an Opera browser issue at first but it happens in Firefox also, and in Internet Exploder on my wife's Windows PC.
Just wondering.
And after an otherwise glorious morning, it's gone quite dark here in Omarama, with more rain and hail falling.
Becoming quite active now. Development is inland near the foothills. Many cells have small hail. Some lightning strikes in North Canterbury now near the coast.

Very strong echoes from a storm inland vicinity of the Rakaia River with a high probability of hail about 15mm. Another strong cell developing about half way between there and CHCH.
Just partly cloudy out near Akaroa so far today; no rain yet, but cloud is now thickening to the west. (not that I can see far far in that direction, as I'm just below the hills on the west side of Akaroa Habour)
Set my camera up and taped for about 8 mins dont know if i got anything i didnt see any flashes but will have to see.
After that had 2 showers of rain come through most recent one 10 minutes ago with large drops of rain and moderate close to being heavy.
Still NE here at the moment beginning to wonder if the southerly is coming some nice fine breaks appearing further inland and a few Cells visable there still more to come lets see.
Cheers
JASON.
Just come back in from Homebush, behind Darfield.
Sadly nothing to report. Sky filled in and came onto rain.
...and that's it.
However going down Blenheim Road, the sky looked more spectacular as a bit of a convergence formed.
Got home and found 6.6mm in rain-gauge from a possible heavy downpour just previous to this.
Anyway, no lightning/thunder seen or observed or sferics heard on radio
Have recieved some lightning on tha radio but that is it.
Have come to the conclusion that i am located in a storm void, they go all avoid right where i am. Har har.
