Very wet night and morning for most of the region, lots of surface flooding in town and the Heathcote was at the top of the bank flowing dirty.
Would easily be up to 45mm now, I havnt checked but the airport site has up to 35mm since 1am and it started properly around 9pm.
It's not heavy rain but is thick and accumulating fast with the strong SW.

Wet and windy overnight and this morning here in Belmont, not very summery. Might have to light the fire? Doesn't look good for New Year celebrations tonight except for places like Haast for example.

Our summers are so far beyond a joke. It's almost worth hibernating through them to wake up for winter.

Just out from an amazing 5 days tramping the St James with the family. Kids were awesome, even the 7 year old had no complaints. 3.5 hot sunny days then a brief few claps of thunder yesterday PM before some light drizzly rain today

Happy new years everyone

Anomalies for the past 15 days show an east/west split.

Dec 2024 was also a month of two halves (almost like a flip from El Nino to La Nina).

Very wet on the West Coast during the first half, but extremely dry conditions continued elsewhere. It was also exceptionally warm for the entire country, with hot, dry and gusty foehn winds whipping up wildfires in Canterbury.

The last half, however, saw a switch to heavy rainfalls for the east of both islands, particularly around Tairawhiti/Gisborne. It was also generally warmer than normal, except for parts of Canterbury, which were a little cooler than normal.
